Japanese Maple Damage, need help
Comments (13)I had a full roof replacement last summer with a large Japanese Maple not three feet from the only place available to park the dumpster. The contractors built a plywood cage around/over my tree so that not even one leaf was touched. I also had new beds everywhere with tiny new annuals, and not even one was stepped on. Of course I had discussed my concerns with the owner before signing the contract and made sure reference to plant protection was in the contract. On the morning of the first day I met the crew with bagels and coffee and said "OK, everything you see here is of value to me. I know mistakes happen, but I am begging you to mind your feet and minimize collateral damage. To you it is just a tree- you break it, say "oops" and that's the end of it. For me the damage will have much more of an impact. You can call me crazy or obsessive and I won't care- just don't break my stuff!" I cannot recommend my guys highly enough- at the end of a huge job (total tear down and metal roofing installed) I saw them on their hands and knees combing through my beds looking for debris or dropped screws. After the fact we may have found 2 or 3 screws and that's it- no other damage whatsoever. Long winded way of saying anticipate these things, discuss them with those who have the power to affect their methods and speak directly to the crew....See MoreSplitting damage Japanese Maple Tamukeyama
Comments (0)Japanese Maple - Tamukeyama Can anyone please help with what may be happening to my Japanese Maple? Tree is about 4 feet. Has been established and done well since planted 4 years ago in our garden. The tree seems to be under stress leaves are very narrow, you would think it needed water, but this is not the case, we have received over 4 inches of rain in the past few days. I have attached pictures of the trunk with recent damage. It appears to be splitting and it looks like the outer layer of the bark is rotting a little. There are no obvious pests on the tree and the damage is about 6 inches from the ground. Any ideas? Thank you. Image link:...See MoreJapanese maple damage
Comments (2)Sounds like what you are doing is about what needs to be done. There isn't much that can be done at this point except wait. TBH, I don't know if I would increase the watering much if any. If you are watering more than twice a week then you are probably watering too much unless the soil drains and dries very quickly. I've noticed on several cold damaged trees where some of the new growth after the freeze died on areas where the cambian was damaged under the bark. So if it is sporadic growth throughout the tree rather than the outer most leaves all over the tree that has dried up, I wouldn't increase the watering. This just means that there was too much damage under the bark for sufficient water transfer to those new shoots. It wouldn't mean that there isn't enough water at the roots, just that there is damage somewhere between....See MoreNew Japanese Maple Looking Sick/Damaged
Comments (5)pull back the soil and mulch.. until you find the root flare .. and then leave it exposed .. https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffab&q=root+flare&iax=images&ia=images where are you.. big city name ... water deeply.. if you havent done so already.. and then dont water again.. until you note that the soil is drying 3 to 6 inches down.. in my MI ... that might be july or so ... when the heat of summer builds enough.. that the soil is drying that deep ... a transplanted tree needs water .. but established trees dont need a lot of water. and they need it down where the roots are.. not sprayed on the surface .. get a hand trowel.. and dig some 3 to 6 inch holes around your tree... to learn how it all works on your soil ... in your yard.. wherever you may be... damaged leaves started at the growers... if it was leafed out ... harmed during shipping.. and then transport to your house.. etc.. its nbd.. ignore leaf damage ... what gal said on the MINOR bark damage ... ken just fyi: https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub...See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
