Pole Bean And Pea Tower question

This looks like a good idea but does it work and how long will it hold up?

This is supposed to be for 12 pole bean vines in 5' of space. Have you tried it?

Something like this would be great for me to be able to grow more kinds of beans.

Ruth, I have one, had it for years found it cumbersome so don't use it, IMO not worth the money they want for them. I have been experimenting the last couple of years with lengths of conduit. My hubby is a wood turner so he makes me assorted tops to either plunk into the top of the conduit or collars to fit around the top, leaving the top open so I can stick an umbrella in the hole if I want to protect my beans from the weather. I even use the conduit as single poles, these I wrap a piece of jute around the pole for the vines to cling to. So easy to store when not in use.
Not having access to a woodturner shouldn't be a problem, even a cork with nails to hang strings from or, even pieces of 1" board, squares or circles, with a piece of dowel to fit in the top of the conduit would work as well. It's amazing what you can come up with when you start thinking outside the box.

Annette I would love to see a picture if you have one.
How do you attach the jute to the pole?
I have one long piece of conduit that I could experiment with.
Do you stick the end in the ground like a pole?

I was in your shoes a couple years ago and have learned A LOT in that time. The person who replied had some good info..... to add on to it... The cool season crops won't live in the heat of summer. You have to plant them early enough to get a crop before the heat takes out the plants. Most or all of these are frost-tolerant or frost-hardy. Other crops thrive in heat and sun during the summer, but die or are very damaged by any frost.... thus, why you have to plant after the last frost of spring. Some of these crops produce until the first frost of fall (although some stop before then.) The timing of when to plant is part of the art of gardening in your local area. For me, I plant peas, lettuce, carrots, beets and radishes quite early in spring. They start producing in a month or two (depends on the crop) and I can plant other seeds or plants after my last frost in the nearby area......... I know the lettuce can co-mingle with the baby tomato plant because the lettuce will be long gone before the tomato takes over. I know the radishes I can plug anywhere and they will produce within 25 days, give or take..... etc. etc. My summer crops that take up a lot of room (eg, squash, cucumbers, melons, tomatoes) but don't really get large until July or so, are normally planted in the same beds as the above-mentioned coop season crops. I haven't planted bush beans, but I will try to find photos of my pole beans....

I'm up in Dallas area and I'm starting my tomatoes and peppers indoors now. Green beans and pole beans don't like any cool weather so they won't go in until much later. Peas (like english peas) on the other hand could probably be planted now......depends on if you think February will get real icy. Zone 8 in Texas is quite large. My last average frost is March 16 so you can work around from there. I plant my tomatoes out around the first of March but I wrap my CRW cages with plastic so if you don't plan on doing that then plant a couple of weeks later. Wind really dries out tomatoes so if your area is prone to that consider finding something to block it. I use old wood shingles but cardboard would do. Just put it in the ground a foot or so from the plant on the side the wind generally comes from. Onions will be showing up in bunches too about now so if you plan on planting those be on the lookout. Seed potatoes will show up about the middle of February and keep a lookout for asparagus too. Those roots show up sometime soon too. Some of this info won't necessarily apply to you but I'm sure your question will be read by all those new gardeners that are chomping at the bit to get out there. Good luck

Well I wanted to add that my pole beans are just now doing! I am so shocked, I have them all over the place, as well as cow peas, yard long asparagus beans and just planted a red runner, I am starting a new set on the porch and going to try and let them climb the porch- my regular bush beans did nothing this year though. Oh and I planted about 30 cow peas- They have taken over everything. I keep pulling them back, Just started new ones in a new section. We have full sun and very little shade here, but I did mix some cow manure with the soil.

Yet another pole bean on a trellis question

Thanks drloyd. I do have a 4' long 2' wide stock tank with a trellis now that is growing pole beans. It might not be totally easy.......but I do think the double trellis might be do-able. I can easily reach in from both ends to pick, and I might even be able to just reach through from each outside to grab the beans, since the cement reinforcing mesh has large openings (with the help of a ladder for the tall stuff). This is all sort of an experiment for me this year. I've had a "regular" garden........planted in the ground for about 40 years, but I just can't deal with all the weeds and bending over anymore. So except for the cucumbers and snow peas, I'll be using stock tanks for everything else. I have used a couple stock tanks for 2 years now, and everything has grown great in them. I just need to figure out the beans. It may take a couple years to tweak it all, but it should be interesting. Thanks again for your input.

Ruth... I grew Bird Egg#3 on a single pole this way. I had a 10' piece of conduit with 2 feet pushed into the ground. Just above the ground we drilled a couple of holes and then again at the top of the pole just large enough to thread the jute through. Threaded a piece jute through the holes at the bottom winding it up the pole to the top, through the holes at the top and then back down the pole crisscross fashion and tied it off. Much easier to do before the pole is in the ground but I wasn't about to pull it out at this point. The best I can do as far as pics go is a closeup where you can see where the jute crisscrosses and a pic of how it looked later, as you can see it didn't take up much space. I could post a couple of pictures of the caps DH made for me if that would be of any help, I'm sure you could fashion something that would work in a similar way.

I was thinking you'd have to glue the jute on.
I've been using bamboo poles without a lot of success.

My brother use bamboo with no problem.
He cut it & left the leave branches on & the butter beans covered it like at was chick wire.
