My pics from the MN Hosta Society Tour

My pics focus mostly on varieties to add to the wish list.

Like Paul, I really liked the house with the Patriots out front. You'll see more pics of the landscape as a whole for that garden.

The owner told me that most of his hosta have been unmoved for 15 years or more, so that's inspiration to me to not get bored and start moving them around.

I was SOOOO moved by the huge mature specimens of that garden.

OMG - that place is beautiful. LOVE the stone steps with the big boulder walls!!! And the pic with the three Patriots evenly spaced with the grass between - great design idea I'll be copying. The thing about being in the ground for so long and being so big - people ask all the time why mine are so big - half of them have been in the ground without division OR moving for 20 years. I wonder if just moving will shrink them...I should start another post with that question.

Melissa - Good for you. Membership is reasonable and if you get involved in 1 or 2 events per year.... They discontinued the hosta dig after 2007 I believe. Nat'l Hosta Convention will be in MN June 2010. Wife and I will probably make the garden tour - 1st time we haven't had a conflict. Paul

Paul, you are so appreciated for all this work. This made my day - and it is just as cold and rainy today in the 'burbs of Chicago as it was there. Makes me homesick. I don't think more than a handful of people were aware of hostas when I lived there (near Lake Nokomis) 25 years ago. Had perfect conditions - oak trees with deep roots and longer days in summer. These collections are amazing as are the landscapes. Thank you so much! Westy

The horticultural name for Bleeding Heart Vine, or Glory Bower, is Clerodendrum Thomsoniae, in case anyone wants to hunt one up. They are hardy to zone 10 -LOL- but can be grown in pots or hangers and wintered indoors for the rest of us. There is also a much hardier shrub, but with different flowers- sort of like skinny lacecap hydrangeas in maroon/pink.

NOW,I understand! None of my hostas are over 6 years old. I know why they look so mature,now. Thanks Melissa! I figured there was a reason why my garden doesn't look that good,and I know why. Phil
