Japanese Maple ID I lost..

Does anyone know what this maple is? I had it, but lost the ID and can't figure it out again. I know that this one grows the normal size of JM, 20' x 20', it grows best in part shade, has EXTREME varegation on the leaves, spring time has a little yellow/olive oil green in leaves, during summer leaves are green with olive oil green varigation. So I don't know how to post a picture on this one but I will try..if not you can find it here:

I give up, I tried to post an image and it will not work for me, ugh...and the link will not work either, it messes up, and I just don't get it..I used to program websites and this is insane! ha..

One of the reticulates,I'm thinking AP 'Shigitatsu Sawa' but I don't have this cultivar.There are people here who do so I'm sure they'll be able to say yay or nay.

Hi, very interesting tree! I would e-mail them (Sooner) a picture and ask them what it is because a) the shape of it has been trained in over many years and tells you nothing about the variety, and b) even with a close-up picture of a leaf (which is really the only thing that would help anyway), it still might be hard as you've acknowledged, as there are hundreds of Japanese maples, loads of them looking alike, and even an expert might have trouble. Also, many have been mixed and matched genetically over time so whether or not any one is even not-a-graft or an original species is impossible to tell sometimes unless you actually know.

Thanks. I was wondering if it was a coral bark of some sort. However on all the photos I've seen of those the bark is a much more intense red. Whereas mine is more of a reddish brown. (although I'm sure there are tons of varieties) On top of that, the pics I'm seeing of Sango Kaku's leaves don't seem to match mine. They appear to be solid green and of a slightly different shape. Another variety perhaps? And I will definitely prune some of the low branches. Thanks for the confirmation on that. I had a feeling it wouldn't last in the container long, but it needed to be moved from where it was at. At the moment we don't really have another place for it. Our 'garden' is still a total mess. We've been in the house for about a year and we're still cutting back overgrowth, removing ivy, repairing fences, etc. But eventually we can find it a new home. JM in general seem to do ok in shade, right? Our backyard is almost completely shaded all day due to several mature Douglas Firs and 1 very large apple tree. In the meantime, are there ways to prune this to limit it's height and maybe increase it's width a bit? Can you "pinch"/prune the top to encourage side growth like you can on some perennials? Or would that just mess it up? Thanks, and sorry for all the noob questions. :)

scratch a small patch of the bark lightly at soil level; if the underneath is green, you have a great chance of having new growth. If it's brown and fibrous, and no green shows, then it's not going well....

Although I rarely go out on a limb to ID any cultivar of JM - even the Acer palmatum experts are reluctant to be too specific due to the similarities between many of the cultivars - this one is rather straightforward :-) It is Acer japonicum and I'd strongly suspect the cultivar 'Aconitifolium'.

Here are some leaves on my ap 'Shigitatsu Sawa' for comparison.Grown in 85% shade.

another stab in the dark.....Maybe. 'Tiger Rose' or it looks very much like one of the "Ghost series".

What you reckon Alleycat?...doesn't really look like your Shigitatsu,yours seems to have more lobes.As you say it might be worth checking out the 'Ghost' series

Shigitatsu Sawa is what I thought it was also, but when I did my research before posting here I found that this varitey has some different things about it. I have seen that it turns different colors in photos than I have ever seen before on my tree. My tree is probably about a 7+yr old tree so it might now be fully mature yet, but I have only seen mine on one website with 50 different JM sp. On it but I can't find the page again..Now the Moon var. one, I dont believe it is just due to the moon varities leaves being fuller so to speak. Peaches and cream, oh I wish it was this one, but my friend has that var. And it is not one in the same :/ ugh...

Oh I also forgot to mention that it is bright yellow for it's fall color..I will try to post some more pix when I get a chance and it changes colors to summer time colors..
