Hosta of the Day - Niagara Falls

I love this one in my garden, and in any garden I've seen. The growth rate is impressive, and it seems to resist the slugs and other pests. Mine doesn't match McT's grand champion (hope to see it here) but it remains a favorite.

I don't have Niagara Falls and my L. Ripples is still very young (as you can see!). However, the more upright stance of the latter is already evident in this example. The leaves don't cascade downwards as with Niagara Falls. I include a previous posting relating to the same subject matter that may be of some use. Mine was purchased in the fall of last year. It is still two divisions, and whilst the ripples on the leaves are perhaps more evident at the start of this year, it looks as if it's going to take some time to fill in fully. Would it not be worthwhile to dig up the hosta, see what is going on with the roots and replant? I had a Sum and Substance that was attacked by voles and there was a tunnel right under the S & S. Would it not be good to replant and therefore place soil back where the tunnel is (if one exists)? If no tunnel, no big deal, just replant the hosta. If it is voles, would they not make a return visit?

I like it a lot. Since I've run out of space, I think I have the ideal compromise. I have a big War Paint. In spring I get one of the most amazing varieagated leaves I've ever seen... by early summer, the whole plant goes green and that is no disappointment as it becomes idistinguishable from its parent - Niagara Falls. Its kind of like having two different plants, both lovely.

Thanks for the comments and compliments posted. Denis, It's become one of my favourite plants this season, commanding attention due to its size and habit. I can't claim to have reared it from a pup - I was fortunate enough to purchase it as a mature plant last season at a very reasonable price. Seeing Mctavish's plant peaked my interest in the first place. Hope yours travels well and arrives in good health along with its companions ... who are...? Faye, The rain we received turned out to be less than predicted and we're back to sunny and dry weather - though the temperatures have fallen within the seasonal norms. Everywhere looks super parched and watering restrictions (lawns) are in place. The record books will testify that such a dry and sunny spring and early summer is highly unusual for our neck of the woods. Whilst it is very pleasant for visitors travelling through our region, I also hope that we do get some significant rain in the not too distant future. Smoke from the forest fires has cleared in the past few days, but the threat is still very high. BC

Mine kept a squirrel alive this past winter - I guess. I loved it while I had it. It was my best purchase of 2012. :o(

Esox, I killed two also. Third one was lucky and it is one of the most impressive hostas I grow. It's not difficult to grow and it is fast. I'm not sure how I killed the other two.

Very nice. I may have to star pulling out Yews so I have more room for Hosta.

Had a beautiful one....that showed itself to be infested w/ nematodes several years ago :( SAAAD Tata, little buddy. He didn't survive the boiling.

Mine is new to me this spring. It has shot up a flower in the last week. The white speckles are "deer-be-gone" stuff.

Mine arrived rather late last year, and I put it in a big pot with a fragrant greenie, Aqua Velva.

It's already squeezing Aqua Velva out, and getting some ripples on its borders for sure, doing exactly what I'd hoped it would do. It is a big pot, and I suppose I can wait until dormancy to remove the 2nd hosta.

If you can tell in this picture, NF has a blooming scape already opening.

I am seeing a lot of failures, almost like Great Expectations. Is Niagara Falls a wus? I know I can't blame my failure on anything but my own to protect my hostas from squirrel damage. I should have anticipated their being starved of walnut to drive them to even eat horseradish crowns.

I really would love to have NF and can't afford to buy many to have them die on me.

I'm surprised by all of the failures with Niagara Falls. It's a green hosta. Green hostas are usually easy to grow and grow fast too.

Mine was a small single division when I got it in a hosta sale 3 years ago, now it has 2 eyes and gets big. It is located next to my dry creek. I am waiting until it is really big like McTavish's and hangs over that creek, dreaming. Bernd

Yes, this has turned out to be one of my success stories. It wasn't always that way though. It looked no where near as nice as Gesila's in it's third year.

It now rules the garden. The leaves registered as being 14 x 11. Mine largest so far is 20 x 12 with many 17 or 18 inches. I love this plant!

I had no idea there were failures with Niagara Falls. Was I being selectively blind or something? Every one I see is beautiful. Mine arrived looking good, and continues looking that way.

Theresa, I'd say it was not a wimp. Have not experimented with it, nor have I tried to find a spot it does NOT like, but it was easy to please here. Don't let random problems keep you from trying it again.
