Can anyone tell me which of these maples will do well in the southeast and Atlanta area or would be worth a try and which are some of the more beautiful maples of this list.

I'm a Japanese maple guy and I could give a little advice on them.

I'll first give you a basic list of common A. Palmatum trees that are found in the southeast.
Bloodgood, Boskoop Glory, Burgandy Lace, Butterfly, Crimson Queen, Garnet, Indaba Shidare, Red Dragon, Seiryu, Viridis, Emperor One, Oshio Beni, Sango Kaku, Shishigashira, Suminagashi, Trompenburg, and Tamukeyama are common, and all are nice trees.

Shin Deshojo, Beni Maiko, Katsura, Beni Shichihenge, Chisio Improved, Filigree, Jiro Shidare, Kiyohime, Koto no ito, Mikawa yatsubusa, Omure yama, Red pygmy, Shaina, Tsukushi gata, and Tsuma gaki are some of my personal favorites that should be fine in the southeast, but are likely a bit harder to find.

Aka shigitatsu sawa, Ariadne, Peaches and Cream, Ukigumo, Shigitatsu sawa, and baby lace are nice trees...but I'm not sure how well they do in the heat and humidity (yet).

A. Japonicum 'Acontifolium' and 'Green Cascade' are also great trees that do well.

A. shirasawanum 'Aureum' and 'Autumn Moon' seem to do fine here as well.

The OGR planting at the Atlanta Botanical Garden (downtown) are maturing well according to a friend from Atlanta I talked to in Palm Springs. In South Carolina, the RiverBend Zoo and Botanical Garden has some of the largest roses in the south including La Mortola, some tea noisettes and teas and a lot of found noisettes. Down in Charleston, the Rose Trail in the city adds to the Noisette Planting in the downtown park next to the Citadel and the Boone Plantation OGRs are well established now. Roses Unlimited in Laurens has most of their roses planted at their offices and their ramblers are coming into their own. In northern Florida, GoodWood Plantation has an established rose garden appropriate to the age of the Plantation and has a rose sale every spring. On down the peninsula, a visit to Malcolm Manners collection at the college in Lakeland is a must see. More later

Stuggling to space Teas. Help from the South/East contingency?

From northeast of Knoxville, and about a half a zone colder. My teas reached about six to seven feet with the culture usually afforded HTs: drip irrigation and organic fertilizers. That took five to six years (but for Lady H who languished). Then we had several very dry years and although we didn't lose our well, it was struggling to pump ofr lengthy periods, so the irrigation went off. Tea sizes adjusted backwards to three to four feet. Now with the rains this year, the sizes are back to five to six feet. Originally I planted mine way too close together; silly me, I believed the local rose experts (most of whom are bedecked with awards) who said we couldn't grow teas (etc.) in Tennessee and I was ready to winter protect what I expected to have as struggling bushes. It taught me not to pay much attention to self professed experts. Generalization, except for Safrano, the light yellow teas are smaller here. The pinks love this part of the country and will get big. Leave any dead canes in place: they provide support and are barriers to rabbit predation in late winter. Dead canes will snap off after a year or two and you won't damage live canes by trying to get secateurs in to cut where the cuts don't need to be made. Tea roses can overcome small cankers on their stems, unlike HTs. The winter back in the 1980s when temps got to -28F for three nights probably wiped out our old tea roses; it also wiped out the HTs here. HTs got replanted; the teas should have been replanted as well.

Personally, living that close to the coast, I'd just plant a bunch of Nanjing Beauty around the house and be done with it. Hurricanes are a pain in the butt to deal with. Massive clean up, etc. They stay evergreen round year. Grows very fast. I talked to the director of Dallas Arboretum about it and he's a big fan of it. He said it grows very fast. I've seen it a couple weeks ago and wow it sure grew a lot past two years when I became aware of it a few years ago. I want shade but last thing I want is a tree falling on the house like those tall pine trees! My sister got very lucky. Her several large oak trees barely missed her house when Hurricane Ike came through.
