please help with raspberry growing tips?

hi every gardener people.

i would like to plant raspberries around my border. how many do you think i could plant/ i have about 600 ft. long of area,

3ft wide.

i have never planted these and i would like help with how many plants i could fit, what soil they like, and possible yields, also how to protect from birds and deer.( would the thorny bushes deter deer?) thanks mark.

I am not a proffessional by all means but I know most raspberries are fairly easy to grow and don't require special treatment. Unless your soil is clay or really poor, all you will need is to add some composted dirt or peat moss mixed with your own soil in the holes. Makes the holes 3 times as big as the root or root ball you have.
You will need a fence or some sort of long sturdy support that you will twine the rasberry shoots as they grow. Plant one every 4 ft or more (they grow really fast once established)
As for deers I have always had dogs so to me never been a problem.
birds don't usually eat enough of the berries to cause real problems, I just share. perhaps your area could be bad in which case you can net all around (but that would be some pain to deal with, however it might help with the deer problem as well)
the only reason I answered you is because there are so little activity in these forums I thought no one will. I am not an expert but I do grow raspberries.

You can plant raspberries two feet apart along your border and they will fill in nicely. As for deer we have never had them bother our plants and if you plant an everbearing variety it wont matter because you can mow them off when dormant in the spring and still get a fall crop. As for yield, we have 100 plants in their third year and we picked 700 pint. As far as soil type we had mostly clay, just make sure the roots wont stay wet in a low spot for long.

Why do you think you have had problems in the past? This is really important information as nobody can really do much to help you out without some idea of what went wrong in the past. Given that you are from Texas you will probably want to prefer responses from those who deal with similar issues of heat, relative humidity and soil as you. I have never gardened in Texas and it's a big state so difficult to generalize about, but many Texas gardeners tend to avoid the summer for gardening as it can get too hot and dry for many crops to do well. Some parts of Texas have very alkaline soils (pH 8.0 or above) and very alkaline water which causes nutrient uptake issues for most veggies unless the irrigation water is acidified (or the soil is acidified). One Texas gardener who had alkaline water and soil reported a huge turnaround by simply adding a little household vinegar to the irrigation water. How well onions will grow depends on the type. If you are buying sets it is very unlikely you will know if they are long, short or day neutral types. This is really important as the short and long day types won't form a bulb until the hours of darkness are right. Plant the wrong type and no matter what you do you get small bulbs. Carrots are a mostly cool season crop and to get them to be anything other than tasteless and woody in the heat requires mucho water and mulch in warmer soils. They also need a very loose soil to whatever depth they grow to or they misshape badly. Peppers should love your climate, but tomatos often do suffer in temps above 90F or so. Primarily they have problems with pollination. We can all try to help you have a great season, but really need a bit more info about why you think things didn't go well in the past. For growing in the soil, do you know your soil type (clay, silt, sand), it's pH or have you ever had a soil test?

OK, well fall bearing bear on the end. Unlike blackberries, raspberries seem to grow lateral branches just fine, so it wouldn't really help there. But it may give you bigger berries, yes. It will not hurt anything. And maybe some cultivars would grow better laterals. I have only been growing one fall bearer, I added some more this year. You could also grow cultivars that are smaller like Fall Gold. It rarely get's over 3.5 feet. Great taste too! I wish i had a problem with a long growing season!

Hi Katyajini, I've had what sounds like similar symptoms in my black raspberries for the past two years and have been trying to find out what might be the problem (and hoping that I'm not going to lose this amazing patch of one of my favorite fruits!) I've looked for borer damage and have found none. My recent bout of online research is leading me to believe that I've got a form of raspberry mosaic virus (also referred to as black raspberry necrosis). This form of the virus often doesn't result in the mottling of leaves, but instead causes the tips of new canes to curl downward, turn black, and die. I don't know if that might help explain the symptoms your plants are having, but I think its put me on the right track with mine. Good luck! coral

I would guess that they are dead, but you might want to hold on to them a little longer. I'm worried that you saw leaves that died back which is usually a sure sign for me that the plant isn't going to make it. How long ago did you pot them up? I'm going to guess that it was a water issue rather than heat that did them in, but the heat certainly doesn't help matters. It is difficult to keep bareroots correctly watered because it is easy for them to get too wet when the plant is still dormant and doesn't need much water. But the top of the plant will dry out easily once it starts to leaf out which is why the heat can really hurt them. I'd give them another week or two but if they don't show growth soon then I'd toss them.

I have never had a problem with birds eating any of my raspberries but when I first planted them they got eaten pretty badly by deer. So last year I cut a small piece of fence to put around the smaller ones. The fence was only about 2 feet high and about 1 foot diameter. I think it gave them a good enough start to where the deer hopefully will not bother them. Our neighbor has a whole bunch of older beautiful raspberries and the deer do not bother them.

The deer also ate my new cherry trees last year, so we had to rap some fencing around them too!

OK-I have 3 Tulameen variety raspberry bushes and have my spot all ready to plant them BUT do I cut the grown bushes back after planting??? They are in pots right now and about 3 feet tall and full of new growth/leaves. very healthy looking. Please help-thanks.

I almost exclusively plant bareroot cane fruit, but I think I would cut those plants back severely to let the roots establish to the permanent spot. Tulameen is a summer (floricane) variety, so you'd be sacrificing any fruit this year but will be developing a stronger plant for next year. I believe this variety is a little more susceptible to root rot, so plant it in a dry spot.
