My thoughts only....you can always try it for a season and see if it works...Beans like plenty of sun but that doesn't mean they won't grow in some shade....and you don't mention if it is just to look at or to grow beans to eat...I am growing beans in the shade of a tree...they look great but haven't produced nearly what those in the sun produce.....again my thoughts....I usually prefer to start with a workable plan...and that would mean finding a plant or vine that loves shade or partial sun...Gardening is hard enough to get right without starting out with strikes against you....

I guess my reply would depend upon the definition of "partial shade". Would the plants get a few hours of full sun, or would there be dappled shade (as from a tree overhead) at all times?

One of my gardens gets 6-8 hours of full sun (depending upon daylength) and is shaded by tall trees in morning & late afternoon. The runner beans there blossomed heavily. I suspect they would do as well in light shade. Since they enjoy cool conditions, they may even bloom in heavier shade; but the beauty would be lost.

If your roof has an overhang, consider training the vines to strings running down from the edge, tied to stakes below. Many runner beans will take as much string as you give them. And don't forget that you have more than one color option... you might try "Painted Lady" or "Sunset Runner" (and/or a white-flowered variety) in addition to the more common all-scarlet.

You will need to pick the beans, even if you do not intend to eat them, otherwise they will stop flowering. So you might as well eat them! Harvest them when they are young and before the beans bulge in the pods and cook them just as you would your usual green beans. In my climate the yield is much greater than French beans and they crop for much longer.
