Asiatic Lilies

This is my first year growing lilies and I have some general questions. They have bloomed and they were wonderful. They're done now and I cut off what was left of the blooms as they were getting pretty sad. I have them in one of those half barrel planters and want to move them as soon as possible so I can use that barrel to plant something else for the balance of the summer. My question is should I just dig them up and transplant them now? Do I have to "rest" them and replant next spring? I did read that I am supposed to wait for the foliage to die back but if I just cut the foliage back and dig them up will I (hypothetically) have blooms again next year?

Hi Kate,
Since they are in a barrel it should be relatively easy to plant them out without cutting the foliage back. Or, cut it back by a third. Just be sure to preserve as many of the roots while transplanting.

Also, since they are asiatics rather than orientals (these bloomed in early summer, right?) they've had a decent amount of time post blooming to strengthen the bulbs. So if some stems break off or if they are too large to handle and you decide to cut them most of the way back they will be OK.

Even bulbs that lose their stems early in the season (critters, garden accidents, etc., ) usually bloom again the next season, though there might be a smaller number of blooms.

Thank you for your good feedback. Very helpful. Yes, I believe they are asiatic although I can't seem to put my hands on the tag they came with. I'm going to try and include a picture of some that are similar.

I think that planting 3-5 of the same lily fairly close together, then interspersing other plants with different foliage looks best with lilies. Usually "lily beds" that have only lilies in them look pretty funny, because of their admittedly freakish foliage/stems. But how many flower can compete with the beauty of a lily bloom? With all the hundreds of varieties and hybrids, they can suit just about any need - and they are just so darn dependable! They can usually manage to be planted fairly close to other plants, as long as there is still some breathing room so they don't get disease. Just don't forget where your bulbs are and spear them accidentally!

Searching for the guy who started seeds for asiatic lilies

I was trying to find my way back to a posting he did last year stating if the planted seeds needed to be put in the refrigerator and then brought back out to warm in cycles. Sort of pointless now. I found out that my seeds are sterile and they haven't emerged after 6 weeks. I will have to properly get them pollinated this year and try again next fall.

I have a similar problem, as the leaves are thick and big but no stem emerging. I read in a similar thread that it could be due to the lack of cold period for the bulb prior to planting, which is needed to develop the stem? I can't find a reliable citation for this however. Though I personally do live in a tropical area and didnt store the bulb in a cold area prior, so it makes sense. Are there any updates to how the plant is though? or what you did with it? Did it still sonehwat bloom or did you just wait to get the bulb and replant it again?
