Growing canopy inside my garage, have some questions.

I'm building a 6' x 6' x 8' frame to house several plumerias (among other plants) to thrive during the cold months. I'm looking for a 1000-watt metal halide to provide lighting and heat, probably 12 hours/day. I'd appreciate any advice to the following questions:

[1] What to use for coverage? I've narrowed it down to either mylar or the reflective insulation sheeting at Home Depot. I'm thinking that the insulation material is better, since it keeps in the heat as well as reflecting the light, whereas the mylar is mainly to reflect light. Am I right?

[2] Is it a good idea to leave the top (where the lights will be hung) uncovered, for ventilation, or will that be wasting my heat?

[3] Should the plumerias be on the concrete floor, or on a table?

[4] A fan will also be used to provide air circulation, I'm not sure how many hours to have it on, or if it should be on at the same time as the light.

[5] Where do you guys get your lights? The cheapest 1000W MH I found is about $270 at hydrowarehouse, but shipping is at least $90, so I'm looking for some alternatives.

(2) & (4) I would put a small, ~6", hole with a duct fan blowing OUT on or near the reflective ceiling and put small air entry openings at the bottom. Since you are in California, I don't think that you need much heat. If it is too cold, you can always reverse the direction of the fan. You can connect the fan to a thermostat. Also, I would put the ballast outside.

(5) Get a special MH with extra far red light such as
Eye Hortilux Blue. Otherwise, you should add an extra far red light source.

FWIW, far-red light, if not in the correct ratio to red light, encourages legginess. Most studies suggest you want a 98:100 or 99:100 ratio of R/FR.

Yes, I would cut off branch B and leave A as the modified central leader. Like a hair cut it will grow back. I would leave one bud, and not cut it completely off. Always leave the collar when removing all of branch, so it can heal correctly. I think you should leave one bud node, and not to the collar, as a branch might grow in a better direction from that bud. You can always cut it off again. In general, you should trim all last year's growth by 1/3. Even up to 50% if you want a small tree. yes, you are cutting off fruiting wood, but we want to establish the tree first, the structure, and the roots, worry about fruit later. In the long run the tree will produce better doing this. You want 3 or 4 main scaffold branches. nice if not exactly across from one another but spindling up. Trim these lateral scaffold branches to create secondary branches on them that will be where the fruit will be produced once larger. If you are looking from above the plant you want your scaffold branches to be say at 12 O'clock, 3 O'clock, 6 O'clock, and 9 O'clock. (this is ideal, hardly ever happens that well!). Hopefully these will be spiraling up the central leader, and not directly across, but that is OK. If a branch on the central leader is directly above another branch the top branch will shade the bottom. Remove the top one. The top grows more aggressively, once lower wood is gone, it's gone! So I always leave the lower branch. Always try to prune just above an outward facing bud, and on a slant (top of slant closest to bud), leave a little stem above the bud, 1/4 inch or so. Not directly above the bud. You did well removing crossing branches and ones going inward, but I would trim all branches on a young tree about 1/3 of last year's growth should be removed. I myself want small trees so I remove 50%, sometimes more, and almost all of it once it reaches the height I want. I'm growing mine with an open center. Like a bowl. Also remove secondary branches on the scaffold branches that are growing straight up, or straight down. You want them growing parallel to the ground, or close! Hopefully others will respond too, I'm not like super experienced, but I think what I'm saying is correct.

Thanks for the replies. After reading posts on here until almost 1am this morning, I'm rethinking things. I thought once they germinate I would have enough light with the window but now I realize I won't. So, I'm going to set them up in the basement instead with the mats and hang some shop lights. It's about 50 degrees down there today but I do have heat if I need it. I also forgot I had a $10 credit on Amazon so I went ahead and ordered 2 of the heat mats. I will get the peppers started as soon as they arrive. I bought 4 of the 36 count peat pellet trays instead of the bigger 72 ct trays so that I could keep some things separate based on planting dates. I do know I will have to transplant them, I just didn't want to do it right away because I'm afraid if they are too small I'll hurt them. A couple years ago I got tons of plastic containers from someone on freecycle so I just have to find the smaller ones. If I run low, I will pick up some clear plastic cups. I also found a store near me that carries the 72 cell trays, covers, and refills pretty cheap so now I'm thinking of doing some flowers too. Once all the veggies germinate, I will start my herbs in the 72 cell pack and I'll grab another and some flower seeds. It seems like most people use one cool bulb and one warm bulb instead of the special plant bulbs. While reading thru here a little while ago, I found someone mentioning natural sunlight bulbs. What would be best? I'm getting so excited now!!

You want fruit from your tree? You can't really belive that tree is big enough to support fruit can you? Forget that it's citrus, no fruit tree should try to support fruit at such small size. Also if that is 3 years old you need a new supplier. I prefer four winds like many people here. I have positive things to say about briteleaf also If four winds doesn't have the variety you want if your still aquiring trees. The big ones are 3 year olds from four winds the small are 1 year olds. Always get 3 year if available. This pic has 8 citrus 2 avocado and 3 pepper so sorry that it's a little hard to tell where one plant ends and a neighbor begins.

To the person that said the Sylvania Gro-Lux bulbs do not actually work. HAVE YOU EVEN TRIED THEM? WHERE IS THIS INFORMATION YOU ARE GETTING THAT SAYS THEY DO NOT WORK? You really should back up your statement if you are going to throw out such a judgemental remark. Do you even know if they work or not or are you just trying to bash Sylvania products? Do you really think a company that is renown in making light bulbs would put out a bulb for growing if it was complete b.s.?? It's these type of people that make me not enjoy being part of forums. Now to answer the originally poster's question. YES, THESE BULBS DO WORK BECAUSE THEY HAVE THE PROPER PEAKS IN THE LIGHT SPECTRUM THAT PRODUCE PHOTOSYNTHESIS AND BETA-CARATENES A AND B. PEOPLE, PLANTS DO NOT USE WHITE LIGHT. THEY USE BLUE AND RED MAINLY WITH A LITTLE GREEN, UV-A,B AND INFRA-RED. GO BACK TO SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!

True, but the reason for adding far red light is to increase photosynthesis via the Emerson Enhancement Effect. The wavelengths for peak reactions of this phenomenon and your aforementioned phenomenon do not exactly coincide. There is some evidence that the Emerson Enhancement Effect, or something like it, strongly interacts between opposite ends of the spectrum. On the far red end, it has not been established how far out into infra-red region the effect extends, but I would guess at least 800 nm. At the other end of the spectrum, almost all MH bulbs are very unusual compared to other light sources in that they have a relatively large amount of violet to near ultraviolet light. I believe that is why the Emerson Enhancement Effect (or something like it) is unusually pronounced with MH.

You do know that many types of plumerias are not "Evergreen"?? They will slow down or stop growing for various lengths of times . In most marginal climates this corresponds with cool temps.
Really the only think you need to protect them from is
hard freeze. I learned this on a trip to Costa Rica and noticed several dormant ones . Record low was 58 lol.
Besides they grow MUCH better after a rest. gary

Dormancy is largely an option for plumerias. It is an adaption by them in dry climates. In wet climates, say in Singapore, they bloom all year around. You can see this also in the rubras(variety that can go dormant) that are under street lights in the tropics. They keep their leaves and flower, as long as the heat and water are right.

I have kept my "dormant" plumerias growing thru the winters now for 15 years. They bloom, and are actually stronger for not having to go dormant.

You will notice that most of the problems happen when they are dormant-black tip, root rot. Active growing keeps these issues at bay-esp on Singapores(evergreens) and especially in the colder climates.

The best luck I have had with 1000 watt MH is with the Agrosun. I have not tried the blue bulb yet($$$) but would love to see if it makes that kind of difference.

I would keep the air temp at 70F and have good air circulation.
