looking for any suggestions on planting several types of lillies

Hi:

I have some asiatic and stargazer lillies that are planted under an english walnut tree. Surprisingly, they do very well. I was thinking of putting in some more different types. Anyone have any experience with the gladiator allium? (the real big ones) I'm also thinking of putting in some pink firecracker flowers, and some Giant Glory of the Snow (blue / white) lillies.

From what I've read on the gladiators, they are quite tolerant of various soil types. My problem is that I have basically dry soil being that I'm up on a hill and the general area is shale. You dig down 4 inches and find 8-inch rocks. You get the picture.

Will the types of lillies I mentioned do well in poorer soil, as well as some part shade, since I have other beds that do not receive sun all day.

Any advice on lillies would be great, since the only experience I have is with the stargazers (beautiful variety) and basically yellow asiatics.

I'm confused. Allium 'Gladiator' and Chionodoxa forbesii (Glory of the Snow) are not lilies. They are completely different types of flowers. They only commonality is that they are all bulbs.

Alliums are from the Lilaceae Family, Alliaceae sub-Family, Allium genus. So while they are somewhat related they are not from the Lilium genus. I'd give you advice anyways if I knew anything about Alliums - but I don't. There is an Allium forum though - I'm sure they can help.

Ah... a couple of things... First, about the howea (parlor palm). Does it tend to require misting in a region and/or house that is pretty dry? (I'm thinking that palms are derived from tropical regions.) Second, I've got three Christmas cacti - one is in fairly bright but indirect light (at least many days of the year), the other two are in what I'd think of as true low-light conditions pretty well all year. All three are doing nicely in a fairly fast-draining soil (watered every four to seven days, with weak fertilizer solution in the water about every 14 days).

floridarose, I got my seed from a friend, but I always assumed they were something like Summer Carnival, but after being open pollinated for years, things can change. There is some variation in height, but most are a little shorter like SC, and do often bloom the first year. It's hard to tell if they act as short lived periennials or are just reseeding almost on top of the mother plant. I don't stake my hollyhocks, but grow them against fences and the house. I've tried the Madame Butterfly snaps, and didn't like them as well as la Bella. Not only do la Bellas live longer than most other snaps, when they are pinched back they promptly send another single thick shoot up. When I pinch back Rockets, they start branching off with floppy shoots, though they also live through winter here quite well. La Bella doesn't reseed like the other snaps I grow, though (darn). It's probably a hybrid that wouldn't breed true, anyway. Here is a pic of Rocket snaps. Off to the side are some pink la Bellas. Hopefully, my file isn't too large for posting here.

spazzycat, yum, yum! that wandering jew is gorgeous! I'll try to see if I can add it next year. Great choice. thenk you. david 5311, Knautia 'Mars Midget' sounds like a wonderful choice. I've never grown it. so it will be a fun new plant to add to my garden bed next year. As for crocosmia. I tried lucifer last year. the deer ate *all* of the blooms and the voles ate all of the bulbs. I don't have one plant left :-( My deer seem to delight in taking all of the fun out of gardening for me. they generally will just eat all of the flowers. so I have lots of plants but seldom a bloom. there are only a few plants that they won't touch -- euphorbia and datura come to mind (poisonus plants). but in the poisonus category (or at least my understanding that they are) are irises, and the deer eat them up like candy every year. Go figure. After having said that, you all have given me some wonderful suggestions for plants that I haven't tried yet. and it's always fun to put out a new plant in the garden to see if the deer will eat them. The easiest thing would be to simply ask your neighbor what lily varieties they have that are currently blooming. Most likely asiatics or possibly martagons.

Thanks for the replies. I guess my ignorance abounds....sorry for referring to the glory of the snow and alliums as lillies. Anyway, let me refine my question so it's more suitable to this forum: Will asiatic lillies do well in beds with poor soil? I have beds that receive lots of light, but they do get hot and dry. Can the lillies withstand this?

Black walnuts put something in the soil that some plants can tolerate and others cannot. Apparently your lilies are some that can. I would do a little research on what plants do well under black walnuts before I purchased anything. I don't personally have any experience to share on this, but a quick google search might give you some useful information. -Ais.

Asiatics will probably grow as long as they get sun, hybrid lilies are pretty tough. But they will grow better if you amend the soil when you plant them. Since they should be planted deep (8"-10") this is a good time to throw in a bag(s) of leaf mold, top soil, compost, etc., to help them out. Mulch a lot also. That will help keep the soil cool and moist, and would be especially helpful in dry hot conditions. At least rot won't be a worry!!
