Started my fall legume planting... How about you/

Yesterday I planted most of a 4X4 bed with Burpee's Heavyweight II. In the next few days I'll be planting Brittle Wax and Oregon Sugar Pod in other beds and/or containers. I may also plant Contender and Maxibel if I can find where I put my packets.

What are you planting for fall?

fliptx i growed bluelake pole beans this year they turned out fair i live in middle tennessee and was wanting to know if i can also plant a fall crop of peas or beans of some kind any suggestions ?? thanks

I planted 3' x 8' of Dragon Tongue, Brittle Wax, and Triumphe de Farcy about a week ago. Almost all ~100 seeds came up. Gonna replant some.

I just planted 3' x 8' of Chantenay and Nantes carrots, Golden beets, and Parsnips.

And along one side of the other 3' x 16' I planted 3 types of cucumber in 6 hills (I know I'm over a month late to plant cucumbers but my transplants just up and died in their 4" pots) and then I'm going to do pole beans as well.

Have to go outside and water where I sowed today.

Yes the seasons do overlap but my summer vegetables get pretty tired during the summer heat. I don't try to carry over tomatoes unless they are cherries. I just replant in July. I do keep the peppers and eggplants but the squash are replanted. Cucumbers can be hit by cucumber beetles and I replant them too. It also helps not to plant the whole garden so I keep a few areas open. You can also plant lettuce and radishes and beans under the larger plants. This works really well in wide rows but might not do so well in square foot gardening. That's one of the reasons I still do row cropping. Now if you've planted potatoes and corn, they should have been harvested and open up room. Same with the onions. I think the real problem is that most people in Texas only plant a few different types of vegetables that are perennial in their native tropical setting. Since we rarely have a real spring and fall, we don't "feel" the proper time to plant veggies that like cooler weather. That's my 2 cents worth and I had the same problem but after missing fall veggies for a few years, I forced myself to cull and replant and have been satisfied ever since. Good luck

You could start the peppers & tomato now. Do you know that the tomato is a variety that will do well in the fall? I'm in zone 9 and some take too long to start producing and should be planted in the spring. You could also start the sweet peas now since they like cooler weather. Mine bloom throughout the winter and spring. Don't know about the others. Annuals are usually started in the spring, since they have a shorter growing season.

I lived in Millington from 00-03. We lived in base housing but I played in the dirt there too. I didn't know anything about winter sowing though...probably a good thing at the time! I don't know deborah, I thought poppies are plants that like things on the cooler side. Maybe it even depends on what type of poppie. I sowed CA poppies, shirley poppies 'falling in love' and 2 oriental poppies back in December. Mine are still rather small but I could tell the CA poppies needed to get out of the container. I haven't planted out the other poppies on my list. I guess you could always go ahead and sow some now but reserve some for later just in case? Michelle

here is my best response. Limas or butterbeans and butter peas are the same familiy and will cross with each other. Most folks call the large seeded types limas and the smaller ones butter beans but they are all butter beans to me and are in the rest of the world called limas. the butter peas are rounded versions of the small seeded limas and are commonly called butter peas. Limas and field peas(black eye crowder cream etc) perform best in the heat and will produce seed in the heat and humidity of the south. Common beans grow well in the south but are an early summer crop and planted as soon as the ground has warmed in early spring. Common beans (dry types or green bean types) will not produce seed if tempertures are too high having about the same sensitivity to temperature as tomatoes have. I plant common beans early spring harvest early summer. I plant field peas and limas early summer harvest late summer and fall. I have moderate success with late summer planting of common beans with fall harvest. Hope this helps Rodger

I'm not sure... do a web search for planting schedules for your area. I'd guess it's probably too late but check to make sure. You could grow snow peas as a cover crop. You probably wouldn't get peas in time, but the young leaves and shoots are yummy and then you can till in the rest to improve soil.

I keep finding more room for Brittle Wax. They're so tasty and freeze well.

Despite the leafroller caterpillars and a few green stink bugs I've had the pleasure of smooshing, my bush beans are taking off like a rocket. About half of the plants are showing a dozen buds each, I've got about 50 flowers already. I expect to see little beans in a week or so.

The purple flowers of the Dragon Tongue are so nice. :)

Pole beans are growing quick too. Runners are growing 5-8 inches a night (set up my trellis 2 nights ago).

Planted late peas which are now podding, but I've noticed that the pea plants themselves are much smaller, almost dwarfed, compared to the lush spring growth. THis is the same for 3 different varieties-both snow peas and shellers.

Also have black beans (the string type) planted in August bearing now.

In south central PA, most of the fall planting has to be finished by August or September to be ready before freezing weather hits.
