south facing window + supplemental light

My question is regarding supplemental lighting for a south-facing window. I'd like to raise some tree seedlings this winter, and they'll appreciate "full sun", but my window can't provide that for 12 hours per day. Would a sodium vapor light be the most appropriate light in these circumstances? How much natural sun is required to balance the yellow sodium lights?

Would a standard 250 Watt sodium vapor light be appropriate to provide supplemental lighting for the 3x3' growing area? Or is 400 W necessary? The specialty "grow" sodium lamps (i.e., "hortilux", "agrosun") are only available in 400 and 1000 W -- how necessary are these?

Any advice will be appreciated, as I've got no experience with artificial lighting.
