House plants that can handle a hot, south-facing garden window?
Comments (16)BB... Yep, please get a thermometer. It'll help. Body temps differ. For instance, my sister, Gloria is ALWAYS warm/hot, I'm the opposite, freezing. :) During winter, on holidays such as Christmas & New Year's, she runs the a/c. While cooking, she wears shorts, I'm in my coat. lol And I help prepare dinner/s. Plus bake desserts. I'm sure your garden window area gets hot, but leave the exact temp to a thermometer. Heck, they're even sold at Dollar Stores. Gasteria blooms are pretty but don't last long..Well, at least mine don't. Depends on Gasteria type. Did you know Jades bloom? Also, what is the second plant on the lower tier? Add some flowering and fragrant plants, and variegated for color. A lot can be done in your garden window. Toni...See MoreExtra! Extra! Comments (150)3 more over the weekend... Ruellia has little rootlets now. Heavenly Blue MG and a Pink or White MG that I had forgotten about! *********** On the otherhand in my little 4-shelf greenhouse, with my indoor-sown plants that are being hardened-off, I had zipped the flaps shut on Saturday night when it was rather stormy out there. What were nice healthy green plants on Saturday were crispy dead and black looking on Sunday morning. I don't think it got cold enough overnight to have been because of frost or anything.... so it must be from too much heat build up in there on Sunday morning (yeah, I didn't get out there till around lunch time.....) I managed to revive a few things and left the flaps open ever since! Ang...See MoreHow to prevent plants from becoming leggy in south facing window?
Comments (8)tl Outside light is much stronger than what gets inside, so even if the plants are getting bone dry and going limp outside of that window, inside doesn't get same intensity - and the sun is much higher now so amount getting thru the window is less too. I have 2 large south windows and it is interesting to see how much less sun is getting in now comparing to just couple months ago....See MoreHow many here bought or acquired more plants because of this forum?
Comments (42)Genera of greatest interest to me are Acharagma, Ariocarpus, Astrophytum, Aztekium, Cumarinia, Epithelantha, Geohintonia, Leuchtenbergia, Lophophora (some of these are ILLEGAL in the US), Obregonia, Ortegocactus, Pelecyphora, Stenocactus (spectacular wavy ribs), Strombocactus, Toumeya, Turbinicarpus. Many of these are regarded as difficult and I rarely see any mentioned in this forum. To be honest, Mike, if you are interested, do a google for pics, that will bring up much better ones than I can produce. But I am more than happy to answer any questions about my small collection....See Moremyermike_1micha
