A few weeks back I posted asking help on how to plant/water my first hosta - a Guacamole. I'm excited to say that its its doing well. Thanks to the people who responded!

Well I ended up getting a second hosta - a Gold Standard. This one started out kinda iffy, with its leaves and petioles hanging on the ground. But thanks to a couple posts (I think by Ken) about using masking tape to tape up the leaves, this one is definitely hanging in there. Thanks Ken!

Steph - did you know that the National Hosta Convention is being held in Indianapolis on June 20-23? Not sure if it is sold out but there are times that the vendors are open to the public.

I`m hoping to place my first order with Hallson`s this year, too. By the time this HELLISH heat and humidity ever breaks, they`ll probably be sold out of what I want to order. There`s no break in sight yet and I`m so miserable I`m at the point that I don`t care if everything in my garden dries up!

Hostas, Astilbes, sweet woodruff(creeping ground cover) bleeding hearts (they have different kinds if you don't like the traditional pink one), columbines, ferns, some irises will deal with some shade, brunneras, pulmonaria, lamium(another ground cover), lupines, Heuchera(they are really pretty they have tons of colors! ranging from light pink to orange to green to dark purple black. they are also known as "coral bells" even though they don't always bloom a pink color) there are also tiarella, heucherella If you don't care about flowers someone had mentioned something in the Hosta forum about daylily foliage which I never thought of before. The foliage does look kind of nice they don't bloom in deep shade but they will grow and who knows, there might be enough light in that area for them to bloom. One of the things you can do is add soil and mound it up a little if you do try to put in a garden. How much sun does this spot get if any at all? There are a bunch of possibilities for your little spot. You could even get a whiskey barrel and put some shade loving plants there if you are too worried about roots. good luck Here is a link that might be useful: heucheras and shade plants

Hi and welcome to the forum! I think it is so nice that you are able to build a house on your family's farm...what a nice place to raise a family. Okay, so a few suggestions... The great room is pretty awkward. It is very narrow and long. I am assuming that you will actually be dividing this space up into 2 separate living areas...probably with a slightly more formal feel to the area in the front of the house. Is this correct? Whenever I've been in homes that have this layout, it seems to "feel" better whenever there is a clear distinction between the two spaces. For example, you could put the fireplace on the wall opposite the kitchen rather than in the corner and then center the furniture in that area around it...It would give this area more of that individual feel and help you to break up the space. If not, then I think columns work too, but I don't think that's the feel you're looking for here... The kitchen probably doesn't have enough cabinetry. You have space to make the island a little larger (maybe/maybe not...I'm not sure how much clearance you have between it and the walls/cabinets) which would allow you to utilize it for storage. Or, you could put a run of cabinets opposite the outside wall. And, I definitely think the half-wall separator is a nuisance for furniture placement and doesn't help the flow of any of the rooms. Powder room- I agree that a pocket door would be helpful here, but it's probably not necessary. I like the size of the master bedroom. I think you need to find a way to borrow some of that space for your bathroom and walk-in closet. That closet is probably less than 6' X 4' at its' widest point. Are you planning on doing some sort of cubbies in there on that far back wall? That will be about the only thing you could do to make it usable. I think this would be a tight closet to share... I am trying to come up with some solution were I can remove the white picket fence but still have some marker between the properties. I thought about a hedge, but I'm thinking it might seem odd to have a row of hedges going from my backyard all the way to the street. I agree, those rows of hedges that mark the edge of properties often look strange in a subdivision. But you could mark the edge of your property by putting beds that curve into your yard at the edges of the property. The side of the bed that is at the edge of your neighbor's property would be straight, and the edges of the bed near your home would be curved. With a tree and some other plants in the bed to frame the house, that would be very nice and mark the edge of your property. The lovely thing about beds is that if they are well-done, they don't require as much maintenance as grass. As far as black-topping the driveway - I love the look of black-topped driveways further north. But I was raised in south Georgia, and there's a reason our driveways aren't black. If you and your husband are young and plan to have kids, a light-colored driveway would be easier for them to tricycle on, color with sidewalk chalk on, etc. Landscape your yard well, with a plan as outsideplaying says, and then pick the colors for your door. Our first house was gray with burgandy shutters and cream colored trim. Our landscape architect was able to highlight the colors of our home by picking plants that played well with the burgandy. But it's much easier to pick paint than plants, so pick your landscaping first. For example, if you plant pink azaleas, you might not want a coral door. But if you plant some gorgeous Miss Huff Lantana, you might love, love, love an orange/red door with it. If you are new to landscaping, I know it sounds so much easier and faster to focus on the door color, the shutters, etc. But landscaping will give you the biggest wow for your money. But get some input from a professional first. You'll be surprised how much better your home will look with some nicely laid out beds trenched at the edges and mulched with pine straw. Even if there are only a few plants in there to start with. But get a plan first. Have fun deciding what to do with your new home!

Thanks Teresa! I just checked out the Indy Hosta Society website about the convention. Of course that happens to be the weekend I have to head up to South Bend for my brother's wedding. But according to the website it looks like its open to the public from 1 to 11pm on Wednesday June 20th. Just might have to drag my husband up there after work. We do have our 2nd anniversary coming up the following Monday -- there we go an easy anniversary present for him to get me, more hostas. And thereby inching closer to Ken's prediction of 30 by the end of the summer. LOL!

Ya know Ken, I spent quite a while reading some more posts on this forum yesterday. My husband came upstairs and asked me "how much can you really read on one darn plant?" I can just the look on his face if tell him that you predict I will have 30 hostas by the end of the summer! LOL :)

Steph - make every effort to get to the convention. You could meet some of the forum members and hosta hybridizers whose names you see at the hosta library.

Second anniversary? I think that translates to 2 hostas. lol I think your next purchase needs to be Sagae. Easy to find, not expensive and a real showpiece.

Hi! I am brand new to not only this forum, but also this web site and I have to say a big ditto to the subject of this thread! I am also relatively new to hostas and have already picked up some valuable info here. I can tell you all are going to be dangerous, however - I feel my collection of 42 will be expanding exponentially :) Leslie

Boy ya better watch out, these hostapeople will definitely enable you to expand upon that collection of 42! :) So much for me only having 2 hostas! haha

Run well you still can, I'll guarantee you they will suck in, lol. Although I don't have the space I would like for my hostas, I am working on it. Still trying to convince hubby that we really don't need that front lawn, or the back for that matter.
Have to say my favourite one I do have is Leola Fraim, it's just 2 yrs old and absolutely huge. I'll post a pic in the next day or two, soon as I have time to breath.
