What can I plant under my tree ? ( pic)

Hello everyone -- newbie to gardening here ! I'm glad I found this forum .......... I need advice .

We built a deck about 5 years ago , and it left a big shaded area under a tree that I don't know what to do with. Every year we cover the dirt with mulch , because we don't know what to plant - or if anything will grow under a tree. The tree is a big Box Elder . I'm so sick of mulch - will anything grow here ? Bushes ? ( oh -- I'm in Wisconsin )

I'm in Wisconsin, too! Looks like a perfect place for shade plants that like it on the dry side...hostas grow anywhere. Sweet woodruff would fill in under and around them. Maybe an astilbe (a. chinesis take less water than others) in the corner next to the stairs. If you can dig there, I'd amend the soil with compost. If not, just add some to each planting hole. They'd have to be watered the first year, but after that, that should be okay under a box elder.

This is a difficult spot because anything growing here will have root competition with an established tree, reduced water and reduced lighting. Try:

Pachysandra

Lamium

Pumonaria

Ivy (Hedera)

Vinca

You might get samples of anything you think you might like, put them all in, give it a year to see what thrives, then go with one of the plants that does best.

In our raised beds along the driveway have a double row of everbearing strawberries in front with rhubarb behind spaced 3' apart from each other & at least 4' from the trunk of the dwarf trees, then I plant garlic & onion between the double row of strawberries & between the rhubarbs in hopes to repel deer, but it doesn't stop them when they're hungry.

i agree with Patty. also, some of its roots are shallow, so digging near the trunk and out towards the dripline will damage some of its roots. what i've done is placed some small potted plants around my trees.

Contrary to what you might hear if your pine is cut high and it must be if you want to plant under it, hosta will grow there. Never just water the hosta. The roots of the tree will grow toward the water and choke it out.

I agree with comments above that you should not stress the trees by planting beneath them or by trimming them. Topping is so detrimental to tree health that good arborists will not do it. Hemlocks in the northeastern U.S. are already under stress by the introduced aphid-like hemlock woolly adelgid. Sadly, many groves are declining and dying due to this infestation. The addition of mulch beneath the trees might add some definition to the space and reduce the "jungle like" feel of the space. As nice as it might be to look at, as heavily-used by children as your yard is, a lawn is probably not practical at this point ... been there, done that ;-) ... but you might be able to improve the lawn slightly with the right type of turfgrass for high-use areas. You might want to add some perennials for dry shade or spring bulbs along the edge of the mulched area in the less-used areas. Installing small plants will disturb the hemlock roots less, and they will catch up surprisingly quickly. Epimedium is one of my favorites for dry shade; it blooms in the spring and the leaves are nearly winter-hardy in my zone 7 garden. Be careful, though, as there are clumping and running (spreading) varieties; the clumping varieties will stay pretty much where you put them, increasing gradually in size.

1 or more large containers might be nice, along with some hanging plants off the railing in ones of those flower boxes attached to it...

Hostas, Astilbes, sweet woodruff(creeping ground cover) bleeding hearts (they have different kinds if you don't like the traditional pink one), columbines, ferns, some irises will deal with some shade, brunneras, pulmonaria, lamium(another ground cover), lupines, Heuchera(they are really pretty they have tons of colors! ranging from light pink to orange to green to dark purple black. they are also known as "coral bells" even though they don't always bloom a pink color) there are also tiarella, heucherella

If you don't care about flowers someone had mentioned something in the Hosta forum about daylily foliage which I never thought of before. The foliage does look kind of nice they don't bloom in deep shade but they will grow and who knows, there might be enough light in that area for them to bloom.

One of the things you can do is add soil and mound it up a little if you do try to put in a garden. How much sun does this spot get if any at all? There are a bunch of possibilities for your little spot. You could even get a whiskey barrel and put some shade loving plants there if you are too worried about roots.

I would try lamium that stuff lets off seeds and they will spread nicely around the tree trunk. My neighbors have two large walnut trees and the only thing that will grow under them is hostas. They love to garden too and it's a shame nothing else will grow.
