June versus June Fever

I recently purchased June Fever and I have an 5-6 year old June.

While the differences are semi-obvious I'm wondering if these plants are really just the same. Genetically, are they different in some way?

Adding more confusion I see plenty June's that have a much thinner margin than my June but are still wider than my June Fever. So do these variations in plants make them different or better yet are they genetically different?

I can't answer about genetics but I do know that June Fever is a June Sport also all my Junes look different in different amounts of shade/sun as far as color. But one this is constant they all have a decent sized edge.

I think as far as "the same" really sometimes is a personal call. There are a ton of "look a likes" out there but people(like my self) will still get them all. Like I think High Society, Heatwave and June all are very similar but I have them anyway.

My Junes and June Fever are totally different. June Fever has shiny leaves, Justine is a darker version of June Fever with fancier margins. NOTHING compares to June. She'll get much lighter under brighter growing conditions. Here are the three just now grown under the same light.

Oops, sorry, should have said that I agree that the hosta on left, if the surface of the leaf is shiny, looks like June Fever.....a nice June Fever! :-)

Sherry, you will be happy with this one. Here is a seasonal progression. June Fever on May 5, 2015 And the same June Fever last year on May 23 And then again in August 2014. She is in a lot of sun so the leaves turn almost white where they are exposed to the sun. And before you ask, I bought this one in June 2007 so it is a fairly mature plant.

it can take 2 or 3 years ... for a transplant to show it true form .... planted in may... its spent most of it energy growing roots for next year ... so its not surprising it might be hard to ID ... try again in late spring.. and throw a scale in there.. anything we might recognize ... ken

Jo... no doubt the whole cast will have an opportunity to take their curtain call at some point! I'm not necessarily selecting the biggest..., brightest... or ones with the most potential... ...however the ones that make the cut this time around will be given more than one line in the play - if you catch my drift! As with many sports, the devil's in the details. Immature 'June's will have a fairly narrow margin, not unlike 'June Fever'. However, 'June Fever' does not have the glaucous bloom to its leaves and emerges yellow in the spring, unlike the green 'June' emergence.

As I understand it, some differences between sports and the original plant are genetic differences and some aren't. In other words, there are more ways that sports occur besides the mutation of the genetic material. For example, the genes could simply rearrange themselves.

To know if the genes have actually mutated, I believe you'd have to do a DNA analysis.

Anyway, June is a much more beautiful hosta than June Fever, hands down. In fact, though I really like a lot of hostas, I doubt there's one which is more beautiful than June.

Babka's picture is worth a thousand words. And actually the registration data was wrong for June Fever and it is NOT a sport of June but is actually a sport of Devon Green. The registration was simply submitted with the wrong information.

Do you maybe have a mislabelled June Fever?

Next time I visit a friend of my Moms, I will try to get some pics of her June Hosta.. They are incredible... The best I have ever seen probably. I am afraid she has lost the markings on many plants, she is around 80 and gardening a huge area.. probably to much area now..
I will try to get pics, and June or not.. you will ALL want a piece of them ;)

Great pictures :)

I think it is easy to see that June Fever is not actually a sport of June that is just missing the wax, but is really a yellow centered sport of the solid, shiny dark green Devon Green.

Personally I really like the unique coloring of June Fever, and think that it only disappoints when we compare it to June.
