Why is Candy or Blackberry Lily not a lily?

I wrote several days ago trying to identify what I thought was a lily. The very first reply I got told me to go elsewhere because what I was describing was not a lily. I did post in Perennials and found that the plant I have is known as candy lily or blackberry lily. I just wonder why they are called that if they are not lilies, or whether the response I got on the lily forum was wrong and they indeed are lilies? I'd like to know exactly what group they belong to if not a lily.

A lot of plants have "lily" in their names. That does not make them true Liles (Lilium genus). It is a good practice to make a simple research before you post your question. I already gave you the link to North American Lily Society that has answers to your question. OK, one more time:

Also, folks from Perrenials forum gave you scientific names for your plant:
blackberry lily - Belamcanda chinensis
or candy lily - Pardancanda norissi
Simple search on Google can give you all info about the group they belong to.

Thank you again for your information. I apologize for not researching the names given in perennials. After spending my life in highrise apartments in big cities, I am absolutely a novice gardener. And while I'm giving out excuses, I, at age 70, am not very computer literate and have dial-up which moves at warp speed. If you see my user name in any of the forums, you might just avoid me. I will try to do better research before posting in the future, because I have found I love gardening and this site is excellent, so I'll probably be asking other questions. Thanks, alleycallie

Excuse me, are you talking about Belamconda chinensis? I also find Leopard Lily for common name. I have found them popping up in the gravel walk near my nursery bought plant, and transplanted them to better area. Despite my casual handling they are thriving, so I decided to try growing from seed. Since they choose the gravel I assumed they needed a cold stratification to germinate. In mid spring I placed seed on a damp paper towel, rolled up, and put in plastic bag in frig. Forgot about them for a month or so. When I checked, almost all of the had broken dormancy, (seed cracked, small rootlet showing) so I planted them in pots outside. As far as I can tell ALL have sprouted and are growing along. Very small, difficult to tell from grass, so I transplanted about 1/2 in July to an area I can keep grass free long enough to see if they succeed. I don't expect to see flowers or the fascinating seed pods for a year or two, but that's the fun!

Pardancanda norisii (Candy Lily) is a cross of Belamcanda (BlackBerry Lily)and another irisy plant- The only way I can tell most of mine apart is size, OK- and where I planted them- The Candy Lilies are MUCH larger than the Blackberry Lilies- also Candy Lilies can look much different than Blackberry Lilies- with solid colors and a whole range of color combinations- whereas the Black berry lilies all look the same- an orangey-yellow with scarlet burgundy spots on all the petals- since the first photo shows much less spots on 3 of the petals- I would bet that you have a Candy Lily. But a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.... Until seed trading time that is.... I have wintersown these with great success- and better yet- I started some (200) indoors, under lights in January- and had blooms the same year from all the spotted blackberry looking Candy Lilies. The Blackberry lilies took 2 years to bloom when started indoors- and 3 for wintersowing. Funny thing- I did not see more unusual color combinations on the Candy Lilies till the second year- and that was only about 10 percent of all of those I planted out. I have a named variety plant (Sangria I think it is called) this year that I am looking forward to starting seed from to see what may happen to these flowers- The plant is all by itself- with no other candy lilies near by- but it is producing seed heads.... Maybe I will know by late next summer..... They are GREAT drought resistant plants that add an iris foliage look to your dry hot spots- That really pump out the seeds! I hope you all can try some! I WS trade seeds labeled "Blackberry lily" my first two years of WSing. Got a few plants, no flowers. I was disappointed. This year a wonderful grouping "emerged" in spring and flowered like crazy - shades of orange only, but so pretty. Put out tons of seed but many of the pods were ravaged by some kind of rotten bug. Only was able to save a handful. The are drying now and are taking a LONG time!

Oh, you are very welcome! Sorry, I did not mean to be rude, it is just my poor English. I struggle every time I write in English, but since nobody else answered, I tried to be helpful. What I meant: you have all info you need to know more about your plants. It is just really easy to do:

First, go to the google site (google.com) or any other site with a search engine (yahoo.com is another one).
Then enter you key words into search textbox and press 'Search' button. You will get tons of info about your subject. Also, you can choose 'Image' option. You will get pictures that have your key words in their names or descriptions. In your case the key words are either common names (blackberry lily) or scientific names (Belamcanda chinensis). Scientific names are better for searching because they are unique.

Did people from the Perrenials forum identify your plants correctly?

Alleycallie: Welcome to gardening. I have been gardening for 15 years and still don't know nearly enough. Just started shade gardening in the last few months. Didn't know what grew there except hosta. Everyone has been very helpful at GW. Welcome aboard.

Thanks to both of you for your encouragement. Our little rural library has DSL, but it is only open three times a week, when I work at a part-time job (got suckered into running small town chamber of commerce). I'm considering getting it at home, because waiting for plant pictures to download or even waiting for the pages in this forum to download is really frustrating, drives me nuts.
