Deer - I never thought of this!!!
Comments (25)Gosh, I'm really really sorry that you don't have any deer to experiment with. Brings tears to my eyes - if only the rest of us could bring you some! I mineralized a big patch of sweet potatoes at my place in north florida, planted the slips in early april and worked hard to keep them alive in very dry windy weather. The patch grew spectacularly once the rains came. In the past five years of gardening there with cow manure and mushroom compost, including sweet potatoes, never had a deer graze anything. Put in a whole range of minerals and bang, they smelled it from miles away....See MoreVeggies to not eat raw
Comments (23)I have loved Rhubarb since a young girl, when my grandmother used to make Rhubarb pies. Yummmmm. On the subject of Flea Beetles, I read somewhere the poke can attract them, too. It seems that there is a certain species that is attracted to plants in the Solonaceae family, including eggplant, potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, and ornamental Datura. I read also that you can add garlic to your pepper (capsaicin) spray and that can help. Soak stems and leaves with the spray. I would go for the organic methods first. As Dawn suggested, planting the eggplant later, and also planting "plants" rather than seeds, is helpful, putting you beyond the Flea Beetles normal season. They don't like heat, but they also do NOT like moisture. Coffee grounds sprinkled around the plants can be helpful. It is similar to use of DE IMHO. Cleaning up plant debris around your garden in the fall can help prevent overwintering Flea Beetles or larvae. Don't give the little suckers a place to hibernate! When I had an ornamental grapevine, they loved it! As to veggies raw, I love raw potatoes! I don't care for Brussel Sprouts raw, because they have a bitter taste when uncooked. In addition to the obvious raw veggies one eats, I love cabbage, summer squashes (in salads or just munching), turnips, onions (green, white, yellow, or red), artichokes (base of leaves, heart...yum!), corn, peas, okra. I am not a pepper fan, so don't like them raw or cooked. I've attached info on organic pest management. Scroll down to flea beetles. Bon Appetit! Comments (47)Thanks everyone! I appreciate the vote of confidence! lascatx and jterrilynn, thank you so much for putting the time to create those mock ups. jterrilynn, I got the strip from behr yesterday. It's definitely darker then what we have up now. very pretty color. I do really like the RP, especially this morning as we actually have a little sun poking through. It's amazing how much this color changes throughout the day. funcolors, I'm glad you chimed back in from the other post. I was thinking the same thing that the others are so close to each other, but wasn't sure if it was just my untrained eye. My husband came in with all the other samples pinned up and said, do you really think we need to spend another $120+ for that small of a difference. We will finish it up on Monday/Tuesday as we have to replace the baseboards and then I'll post another pic. I'll need suggestions for window treatments at that time ;) Love this board, you are all so very helpful!...See MoreEating Raw Flour?
Comments (6)Grandma always told me that if I make gravy with flour I should cook it a couple of minutes to get rid of the "raw flour" taste. I never really noticed a difference between the gravy I made with a roux, which she called "brown flour gravy" and that which was thickened by making a slurry with flour and broth, but she insisted. Flour is ground/milled wheat. I used to pull wheat berries from the stalks and eat them when I was a kid and Grandpa had wheat, so it's not really bad for you because it's uncooked. It's a "field" product, and there have been some cases of e coli due to the birds and animals which have access to those vast fields of wheat before picking. Those pathogens can stay in the milled flour until they are rendered safe by cooking. So, it's not bad for you because it's a raw product, it's bad for you only if it's contaminated. The risk is not big, but it's present, so do as you wish. So, do I think you're eating raw flour. Nope, I don't. You've heated it and simmered it, it's cooked. Annie...See Moredavid52 Zone 6
