Light Heat Exhaust

I was wondering home many people use a ventilation system for their HID lights? I just got a light recently and it came with a squirrel cage fan. I was wondering weather to mount the fan so it sucks heat from the light or blows cooler air onto the light. Also does anyone know a good way to mount a squirrel cage fan, like hang it form the ceiling?

the fans are generally used when growing marijuana in a confined space. If you aren't doing that what do you require a powerful fan like that for? anyway the type of fan you are refering to is meant to suck air from the light. Your light should have a glass plate in the hood to sort of seal it. There should be an inlet and outlet in the hood for airflow. You attach the fan to the hood with ducting.

An indoor HID setup will usually need some form of forced ventilation. A 1000W bulb puts out as much heat as a small electric heater. Run that for 12-14 hours a day and you'll probably need to vent some heat.

The light itself doesn't need the cooling, it is the plants that need cooling. Decide where the room is to be vented and place the fan there. If you have a very large room that will not be overheated by the lights (eg. nice way to keep your basement warm) then you probably don't need such a big fan, just a small one that will keep the air moving around the plants.

That should work ok, something you could to to better insulate your greenhouse would be to put in some bubble wrap or other materials along the insides of the walls and that will really help to hold all of your heat in. You will also want to vent this air into the BOTTOM of your greenhouse, that way the heat can really get some good circulation. but all in all this is a great idea, and kudos on figuring out how to re-use the exhaust!

Mary, take a look at FanTech (fantech.net). Several people on this forum recommended them for making a good product when I was searching last month. I've purchased mine, but it won't be installed until next week. I had always heard good comments about the Panasonic fans because they were so quiet, but like you, we found the bulky, bulging fixture rather unpleasing. With Fantech, the fan itself gets installed separately in the attic, so only a very basic vent grill (with or without lights) gets installed flush with the ceiling. I think this is much less obtrusive than the Panasonic units. Although I would have been happy to get a unit with energy-saving compact fluorescent lights in it, I found the Panasonic seemed extremely bright for a small bathroom. Call other company see if they have a (TIF TIF8500A Carbon Monoxide Analyzer) one of the best on the market. CO2 readings in PPM./ Let the company pull the heat exchanger then take photo of and melted holes in the heat exchanger. Yes you have a leg to stand on about having the furance installed (WRONG)and getting a new one. This MFG of this furance will VOID THE WARRANTY if they know the LP KIT as not install. Buy law you and sue this company for faulty workman ship. You counted on them to install it right. You know something was wrong after first heat season High limit turning off system or lockout. But this is the is the 1st year the trouble has been found you may need talk to a Attorney. Heating greenhouse with house boiler's exhaust

I'd like to see the flue gas composition of a properly-operating condensing, natural gas boiler. Acutely toxic materials should not be the real problem. CO should be very low or nil. It would be oxygen-depleted and high in CO2 and H2O. It might be very good for plant growth. High CO2 will promote plant growth in lighted conditions if not too high. CO2 will certainly be high enough to be dangerous in a confined space. I'd summarize the effects of high CO2 this way, it first makes you stupid, then it makes you fall down and then it kills you. The hard part is the stupid part. People do not react to other symptoms in rational ways so it is very easy to fall down and die. Yes, there are plenty of places where people might be exposed to CO2 as part of their work. That includes greenhouses and breweries. These areas are heavily monitored or the workers carry monitors. I don't recommend your greenhouse plan without a lot of additional study and risk assessment.

you dont have to be growing marijuana to require an exhaust fan for a HID light. squirrel cage fans are best used when they suck air from the reflector hood and then blow the exhaust out the other end of the fan to another area. and yes, hanging it from the ceiling is a good way to hang it. use dryer ducting as your "hoses" to connect the fan to the reflector.

I vented mine right into my terrarium. It keeps it nice and warm for my snakes. Take a look at the 4th pic if you want to see what I did. My fan is a 120VAC 4" fan from radio shack. The duct is just 4" dryer duct from home depot.

Not nearly enough. lol. I have a 400 watt arriving today to replace the 250 watt. It's cold here now, and that room is not heated. I'd say that bulb is keeping the upper sections of the tank about 10 degrees above ambient, and doing nothing for the ground level. If it were exhausting into open air instead of the tank, the heat would go completely unnoticed.
