Hi Lucy, Only two hours of sun is tough to make work for lilies, but your best bet is the Speciosum Album. Speciosum (Album or Rubrum) is more shade tolerant than most. They also are butterfly magnets and would work well in your full sun garden also. "Uchida" is a superior strain of Rubrum - which you might want to consider for your sunny garden. I have it in a sunny garden and it does very well. Speciosum also reproduces faster than most orientals (by stem bulblets) which could be good for filling in a large butterfly garden. Orientals can handle more shade than Asiatics or Trumpets so Cassa Blanca *might* work for you also. Lilium Candidum is a lovely lily and everyone who can grow it should. But that's the catch, it's a species lily that is particular about conditions. If it has them, it's happy - if it doesn't, it's not. Candidum needs sunny conditions and doesn't mind being hot and dry - because it goes dormant over the height of the summer. Unlike other lilies Candidum needs basic conditions (high pH) and needs to be planted shallowly - with the tip of the bulb no more than 1" below the surface. Mine are done blooming now. They'll go dormant soon and then grow a rosette of basal leaves in the Fall that overwinter. If your sunny garden has flowers that can take some lime and you don't mind a bit of a challenge go ahead and try Candidum. However, the bulbs are more expensive, and when affordable are small. I was unsuccessful with bulbs I bought. I don't know if it was the bulbs or the garden - but they've never done much of anything for me besides grow rosettes (no "bloom worthy" flowering stalks in the spring). I've had a lot more success with seed. They caught up with and outperformed the bulbs. Seed require more patience (since it will be a couple years before you get flowers) but you are assured that they are virus free and if they don't work in a particular garden you're not out $$$. All the lilies you mention are cold hardy. -Helen

Thank you both for replying. I wish I knew exactly when- I last see the plants in the evening around 8pm,& first see them in the morning around 7 am, which is when I notice the new damage. I thought that since I never see the rabbit around the plants, and also with the large amoun that it was the groundhog but it would have to be very early am then, correct, as they are not nocturnal? There are no deer around here, but we do see oppossums and I'm sure there are raccoons. I have been looking at every house on my route to work to see if they have damaged plants, and I never notice any. I just see many houses with perfect lilies that are what mine should look like. That's when I think, it has to be rabbits, because we've seen a few in the front yard from time to time, and of course there's the one that "lives" close and vacations just about all day in our yard. I have only seen him happily eating grasses and weeds in the yard, and my kids and husband feed it bread as well. (I know- bad idea, but that ship has sailed-it runs over to us; I can walk/stand right next to it and it doesn't spook because it's been here since last year as a baby) Since it's here so much, you'd think one of us might catch it somewhere in or around my plants- but it never happens. Not even when we watch from inside the house. Then again there are plenty of other rabbits around. I just feel like my garden is a major target. This had never happened before, and the amount being ruined overnight- 2 to 3 flowers at least, and munch marks on several Hostas- really made me think it had to be something big, or worse yet, a combo of critters. I sprayed Havaheart 3 days ago though, and I've not seen any new damage as of yet. We'll see what tomorrow has in store when I get up. Thanks again

They will all lean toward the sun. Your stems will have the flowers mostly in the sunny side. What marla is describing are Upfacing, Outfacing, or Dowward facing varieties. That is dependent on the culivar, and has nothing to do with the light source. You can have anyone of those 3 types, and still have it leaning toward the sun. As long as you are not dealing with the extremes of planting against a house, though, it might not be noticeable. They need a certain number of hours of sunlight a day. If they have that minimum, they are much less likely to show any leaning, though you still may have more blooms on one side than on the other.

Clark, 'Red Dutch' is considered a OT (Oriental-Trumpet) hybrid, I find it very reliable and nicely fragrant without being as overpowering as some. This grouping has been so vigorous I'll need to get in there and lift and divide come next spring. Mxk3, I live within a forest, there seems to be plenty of spiders and beneficial insects and I'm wondering if the released predatory wasp has possibly made it's way here. There's a lily breeder just a hop skip and jump away with a VAST collection and unique own hybrids, I bet he'd be relieved to have the wasp! Dee, yes, am happy how clean and healthy the lilies are this season and that rather ugly looking spider is helping to do his part! :) Roxanna, I'm always waging war with deer! Yesterday, I was sitting at the table and along comes a deer to munch down on the plants, I scared him off in grand style when I flung open the front door nearby to him, jumping out of his skin leaving hoof prints in the asphalt, lol.
