fried green tomatoes got fried today?

I never had this happen before. I planted my fried green tomatoes in a sunny area..this morning I did my garden check and it was fine.

when I went to look at it this evening it looked like it was spray painted with white paint. Looks like the leaves turned to celephane in one part. we had some weird weather today. It was nice this morning and then we had rain. after rain it felt like a sauna outside ant thing temp in sun was about 95..did anyone ever have a hosta burn that quick! and will ie be ok. I assume the leaves look bad but plant will be fine

Wow, fried green tomatoes is right. How was the soil? Moist or really dried out? this is going to be one hot summer.

You can send the plant to a local University plant pathology lab if you want to know for sure what kind of virus this is. Whatever the name, it's a virus, and since plants do not have immune systems it needs to be gotten rid of, pot, soil mix and all. Some viruses do use dagger nematodes as vectors for the disease. Tomato ringspot has this as a vector. You can mitigate that by pouring boiling water over the area where the plant was stationed. You could also use Zerotol as a soil drench in that area. We're west of Ashland, about 60 miles as the crow flies north of Columbus. Only thing we've had turning so far are Early Girls. But that's OK, we'd rather the other tomatoes get some good size to them before starting to ripen.

Fried Green Tomatoes With Vidalia Onion Dressing (Pictures)

Thank you, everyone! Here's the recipe for the dressing. Vidalia Onion Relish 1 cup onions, diced 1 Tblsp. vinegar (I used red wine vinegar) 1/2 cup mayo 1 Tblsp. brown sugar. Blend last three ingredients together, then add onions. Whisk together until smooth. Serve over fried green tomatoes. Enjoy! The batter we use is a brand name batter (Whistle Stop). They do have a website but you can check the little grocery stores (where I found mine). I saved some tomatoes and dressing for myself when we have BLTs tomorrow for lunch. I'm using the fried green tomatoes and dressing instead of ripe tomatoes and plain mayo. I'll post a picture of that as well! Brad AKA Moonwolf

Well, I made fried green tomatoes tonight for my dinner and I have to say they turned out pretty good! I know this is the first time I've made them and it may be the first time I've ever eaten them. Yeah.....weird for a southern gal, right? What I did: sliced the tomatoes about 1/4" thick, put them in a beaten egg bath, dredged them through equal parts of cornbread mix and self-rising flour seasoned with some salt and pepper pan fried in olive oil until browned on both sides served with the Bang Bang Shrimp sauce: 1/2 cup mayo 3 TB sweet chile sauce 1 TB sriracha hot sauce 2 t. rice vinegar Watch out, these 'maters stay very hot a long time after cooking! To add to linda's comment.... if there were a lot of air pockets near the roots, then perhaps they dried out faster, since the leaves are now in so much sun.

sounds like sun scald.. moving a plant from a darker to brighter position ... without hardening off..

perhaps like my pasty winter skin going into full sunshine in spring .... sunburn ... or sunscald ...

increased or complicated by transplant in the hottest season ...

I have a Royal Standard that did the same thing, however not within one day but rather over a few days. It was planted about a week ago. Our days have been in the mid 90's EVERYDAY with NO rain but I do water morning & evening. Should I be worried and should it be moved?

do you guys look at the forecast when thinking about planting...

couldnt it have waited a few days.. until you were only in the 80' ... or a week for the 70's

the biggest lesson i ever learned.. IN SUMMER ... is that you dont have to quit buying... but it is a good time TO QUIT PLANTING ...

pot them up.. in some good media.. and put them in shade.. and PLANT THEM WHEN THE WEATHER IS PROPER ....

remove tongue from cheek.. and offer apology of anyone is offended ...

ps: you ought to see my pile of pots some years.. a hundred of them waiting for sept to be planted .... and of course .. the whole potting thing is its own nightmare .... like having an aneurysm.. and forgetting to water them for 3 weeks ... they now sit on the ledge next to the front door.. which i go out of.. some 100 times per day ... and some times i still forget to water them for 2 weeks ...

Not offended at all Ken! :) As the name states, I am a hosta rookie however I know I shouldn't be planting when it's 90+ outside for weeks straight but I just couldn't resist. I've bought about 40 hosta in the past few weeks and planted all of them. My Royal Standard is the only one that has done this. The rest look great!
