Tobacco Worm Beans

Just wanted to post and let you guys know that I am harvesting my Tobacco Worm Beans and NT Half Runners and love them. My first year for these beans or any pole bean for that matter.

My Thanks to all of you who post and those who have sent me seed. This is my first year on this forum and I wonder how I gardened without it.

What is it that you love about them....Is it the taste or the growth habit or the what? I am dying to try Tobacco Worm beans...Are you going to save any seed to share...that is a blatant hint......

The growth habit I do like but the taste I love.
I have 3 (also have Lazy Wife Greasy Bean) pole beans in one row and plan on saving seeds from all of them. I have read that they can cross but do not have room to spread them out.
I would be more than happy to share any seeds that I save and there should be plenty. Don't let me forget.

Doesn't surprise me, ceresone. Most people have never heard those terms, as they're used mostly by the real old-timers back in the hollows. They're more common, too, in the backwoods of the Appalachians than in the Ozarks. By I have heard the terms used in your mountains. Sometimes when I use those terms I get a look, and a comment to the effect that "my mom used to call them that. Haven't heard the expression in years." But the Ozarks and the Appalachians have a lot in common, in terms of how people lived and worked in the old days, and what they grew. Plus, much of the English settlement of Missouri came right out of Kentucky and, to a lesser degree, Tennessee. In fact, that's why the Appalachian Heirloom Seed Conservancy includes Missouri in it's region, even though it's not an Appalachian state. Often we find heirlooms with a Middle Ground connection there, for instance, which can no longer be found in the Appalachians per se. Our most recent tomato accession, for example, came from a Missouri member who collected it from a now deceased Amish lady who had grown it for more than 50 years, ever since migrating from Tennessee where her people had grown it "for generations." Yet, to date, I cannot find anyone in western Tennesse who's familiar with this tomato. By the same token, I find that the original Whippoorwill cowpea is still grown as a family heirloom primarily in western Kentucky and eastern Missouri.

Thanks.....I really would like to try them and the Lazy wife seeds would be nice too....Do you grow peas...I have lots of pea seeds and would gladly share....

I do grow Pink eye Purple hull. Have for the last 6 years but will try anything new.

I know that the Tobacco Worm bean is a "string" bean...so I am curious if taking the string off does the trick or is it still stringy...I don't mind stringing beans...my Mama taught me to appreciate sitting on the porch stringing beans or shelling peas, but I don't want to string them and still find big old strings in my mouth when I am eating them...so tell me do they string readily?

Ruthie,

With all the real "string beans" that I've grown, the actual pods are actually more tender than most stringless beans. Also, with the Tennessee Cutshort, our family's heirloom, which somewhat resembles the Tobacco Worm Bean, we find that they are actually less work "per mess" than many stringless beans. This is because they are so substantial.
