Intro Year of 2 Cultivars Needed

Hi everyone!

I really need to get organized and get signed up for a subscription to the online R&I Database, but in the meantime, I'm trying to get my collection in the ground at the new place, and I'm planting them by decade. I have 2 I can't easily find intro years for just by searching the net. I'd be much obliged if someone with a subscription to the database would quick look up the year of introduction of SPOUTING HORN and VOLUMINOUS.

There is an all in one almond tree that is self pollinating which I planted recently but I'm having some problems with it which I'm going start another thread on. Thing is, I'm in North Carolina in zone 7B, so I don't really know how it will go in 5. Almonds also seem to thrive in the central valley of CA, much drier than what your describing..

Barbara, I think the 'Lemon Spire' is just a renaming for what is in reality 'Suecica Aurea'. This could be for it's Latin name which doesn't say nothing for a lot of people. The #2 isn't a Juniperus communis, it's a Juniperus chinensis and it's cultivar name is 'Aurea'...

I'm a bit disappointed with their intro, MAPPING NEW YORK. Minimal amount of buds and I think it had only 2 scapes. Second season this year in the garden. Perhaps our weather this year? Maybe some of their other ones are better but I've decided to not invest anymore at this time. Julia

No one said Smaragd "tops out" at 15' - only that it seldom exceeds that height after a considerable amount of time. I know of many local plantings of this selection that have been in place for 30-40 years - unpruned - and are still right around 15-18' tall. And this is here in the PNW where plants tend to grow faster and larger than in many other parts of the country. Various sources also report that "growth slows dramatically" at about 15' and that it can "infrequently" reach 20'. I still think this is a perfectly reasonable choice for a zone 5 situation.

I knew they were both either late 90's or early 2000's, and I wanted to make sure they got in the right bed. I used Google for a few others that I was missing the intro year for, but for some reason Google didn't help me on these 2. Probably I could've searched some more and found it, but my internet access at the new house here is still not great, and the nighttime temps have started letting me know that I am OUT of time to get these planted!

As to where I've been, I've been moving - AGAIN! 2.5 times (the .5 was in/out of a temporary apt. in Ohio) in as many years. ARRRGGHH! DH's company up and relocated their whole corporate office on us. But on a positive note, I'm getting pretty good at moving irises! And I've got a nicer spot for the irises at this new place than either of the 2 previous places. Lots of room, lots of sun, good drainage, decent soil... What was I complaining about again? ;-)
