roots in capillary mat?

This is my first year of starting veggies and annuals under lights. I'm about ready to plant as I've been hardening off for a 1 1/2 weeks. What concerns me is the fact that almost every single plant has roots that extend into the capillary mat that they are sitting on. What do I do? Do I just tear the roots where the pot meets the mat? I'm thinking that next year, I will spend the extra money and get the mats that do not allow roots to penetrate, but what should I do this year?

Thanks, in advance.
