They're Crinum jagus vanillodorum.
At the time I posted the photo, I believed them to be Zephyranthes (and they should have been posted to the Bulb Forum). Further research and a closer look revealed they're more than three feet tall -- they fell over -- and the fragrance is incredibly vanilla. Once open, they stayed open through the day and two remaining buds opened tonight.

Well they sure are purty. I don't know if the crinums grow well around here. I have never seen them for sale in garden centers. In fact, I had never even heard of them until I found Garden Web! I would really like the vanilla fragrance, it's what I like best about heliotrope.

I have Crinum powellii growing in my garden for the first time this year and they look really healthy. The previous two years they sat in pots and I brought them in to overwinter. I will put Crinum jagus vanillodorum on my lust list.

I have no idea where it came from. It just came up and bloomed in an overgrown bed where some things date back for decades. This was a year when the mower didn't invade its space and the rain was just right.

In my search for positive ID, I found a number of sources, with a well-known southwest nursery asking $35 a bulb! Some of the people who sell crinums are much more reasonable.

finally found them on EBay. I am so excited.
