Replant divided iris now or in Spring?

I dug out all my Iris, since they were about 5 years old and over crowded. I washed them off..cut off only the good parts (threw away the old parts and rotted pieces). They are now drying on the deck. Should I plant them now or wait until Spring?
I plan on selling most of them at my local farm market, because I have over 500.

Now is better, as long as they will have enough time to set down roots. When is your first hard freeze? They are supposed to go in 6 weeks earlier than the first freeze. Good luck at the farmer's market.

I know they can be pretty dry when you buy the bagged ones, but I don't allow my iris rhizomes to dry out when I dig them.

Separate them, trim them, either replant them or heel them in. The fussier you are about how they are handled, the quicker they will bloom.

I don't throw out the mother plant, either. She might not bloom again, but she will send out more pups if you replant her.

I think the experts say to divide while the plant is actively growing, which would be next spring. But the truth at most botanic gardens is the staff divides things when they have time not always when it is best. Hostas seem to enlarge over the winter for me so I think that there is some growth going on even though there aren't any leaves above ground. If they are precious to you I would wait, if they aren't then I think you risk losing only a few of them.

I have done it before with no ill effects. Some TBs are going to take a year to re-establish no matter when they're divided. The rhizome that is producing a flower stalk this year is the mother. She will not bloom again but she will give her energy to producing offspring. Don't toss her. The dried up rhizomes (still attached or not) are the ones to toss. Leaves are usually cut back by 1/2 when replanting so the plant stays upright. Give a deep soak, then no more water for a month. Molly Price in her classic book on iris recommends dividing immediately after bloom. It has become popular to wait until late summer but I have not seen documentation that this is preferable.

Hi- Thanks for the feedback. I'm in zone 5a. I had been thinking maybe Patriot based on pics I have seen online, I'll have a look at Minuteman as well. I'm not sure when it was planted. We bought the house last year and the gardens had been neglected for at least 2 years. This picture is early summer- around the last week in June when the hosta looked its best. As summer progresses the leaves burn and fade and it starts to look quite unhappy. I have another of similar size, but a different type in full sun that is gorgeous in the early summer, but extremely unhappy right now. I plan to move it as well, I don't have a pictures of it before it got sun damaged though. I was thinking about putting beds for the hostas along one or both sides of the house or the side of the garage, so no tree roots to worry about. The east side of the house has a porch like the above picture and the hosta could hide the support columns. If I planted them on the other side of the house or along the side of the garage the beds would be adjacent to the foundation, and the dripline might be an issue in some spots. I could also consider some hostas under the crabapple tree on the right side of this picture would that be compatible? The neighboring plant is a hydrangea that I had just planted- Little Lime.

I think it depends if you can do it in a clump without disturbing the roots. I personally would wait until spring as I find my irises suffer a bit after translating.

Hi all,
I have a large 5 yr old Siberian Iris clump that is opening up in the center. It's too late to dig it out to separate it this year but I'm not sure whether it is better to separate it in the spring or fall. Also, it gets very few flowers (5 or 6)considering the size of the clump. It is situated on a hill facing west it does get some sun relief from the late afternoon shading of a Japanese maple. I would love to make my plant happier to flower any suggestions?

Here is something I copied from a Univ of Minn extension flyer on irises:

Division

There are two opportunities for dividing Siberian Iris. To insure flowering it is best to divide in early spring as new growth just appears. Waiting until the new growth has started may stress out the plants and prevent them from flowering that season. Dig up the clump and cut through the thick root system, keeping at least six growing points with adequate roots in each clump. Keep these sections moist, plant immediately, and then water in thoroughly. In late summer or early fall it is possible to cut back the foliage to about six inches, then dig and divide the plant as before. Replant, water in, and mulch well for winter survival. Siberian iris donÃ¢ÂÂt require division as often as bearded iris to perform at their best; their tough crown often requires a strong arm to cut them apart.

Bearded irises need about 6 weeks to establish good roots, so the sooner you can do before Winter, the more likely they'll bloom in the Spring.
If you have hard freezes right now, maybe not a good idea to put back in the ground.
I'm in Northern Calif., and even though I have some freezing, I just dug a bed last week and replanted, to get rid of bad grass weeds. Mine will do just fine in terms of survival.
