Can I divide my overgrown iris now while it's in bloom?

I have a ton of iris in the hell strip out front; it's badly crowded and overrun with some tall grassy weed (it was neglected for at least the last five years). I have a pocket of time to renovate this whole bed and I'd like to divide/transplant the iris while I'm at it - but it's currently blooming, nearing the end of the first big flush. Is it safe to do it now, assuming I'm okay with some decreased blooms next year? Should I discard all rhizomes that currently have flower stalks on them, or can I transplant those for now? Anything else I should do differently for dividing at this sub-optimal time?

Thanks!
