LED Grow Lights Lens

Yesterday I made a LED Grow Lights setup for my chili plants. The LED Lights have two types of lenses one is inside for the individual LEDs and the other one is a single lens covering the LEDs. Without this single lens it covers more area and with the single lens it covers less area/spot lights. Is this single lens for one LED Light for one plant? Or is it to increase the light intensity. Should I remove it? I am new using LED Grow lights, so I am requesting your advice and feedback regarding this single lens.

I'd respond, but I'm still using flourescents. In fact I was thrilled to find you could still get a T12 fixture!

Plants can use the whole spectrum, but they use red most efficiently and they need some blue to avoid getting leggy and so on. If LED grow lights live up to their labeling, they theoretically should give the lowest possible electric bill while still providing adequate light to your plants. But that has to be weighed against the up-front cost. That's in theory. I don't have the practical experience to say much. A 20W incandescent doesn't use much electricity, but it also doesn't put out much light. A 13W CFL from the dollar store would give more, and it's so cheap it would probably pay for itself before it burns out, even off that dinky 7W savings. A 5W LED should give more light than the incandescent, at least. But even with LED efficiency, 5W isn't much.

I have experimented with relatively pure blue fluorescent lights, Westinghouse Special Blue (445 nm peak) and Sylvania Super Diazo (410 nm peak) and plant growth in both cases was poor. Below are scans of photocopies of a paper giving photosynthetic action spectra of 33 different plants: As you can see, there were no tested plants with higher photosynthetic activity in the blue region than the red region.

If you are looking for a LED light and you want something that approximates a 400 or 600 watt HPS, you aren't gonna find a real system for less that the Procyon. Anything that you will find of the variety of the cheap led panels or the ufos have pretty much been shown to be useless cause their leds are too weak as any hydro store owner will tell you. The state of the technology is such that there are really only two products out there that really work -- procyon 100 or the ti-smartlamp 600 and its stronger 1000 watt version the Smartbar. If you take a look at greenpinelane.com you can see tests on all of them. The thing to remember about leds is that while they cost much more than HPS initially they payback the difference quite quickly, in 1 to 3 years depending on how much you pay for power and whether you need to cool, which you will have to do if you use HPS. They have a lifespan of about 10 years so the cost savings overall of LED versus HPS can be quite important, usually somewhere between 40% to 100% when you factor in the power savings. I switched to the Smartlamp myself for the powersavings once I was sure it could flower which it can since it is the only LED out there that i know of that has more than just red and blue leds. The fixture is an old 28W 3000K (not a grow light) fluorescent just I removed all the components and use for these LEDs. I started with fluorescent with 6400K still I use it. I do not know which one is better, fluorescent or LED.

Now I removed all the lenses because visually it covers more area.

Well, I think you should ask yourself some questions.

First of all, though, to deal with part of your query (about
the lens). Anything between the light source and its
destination will be absorptive. That is, it will decrease the
intensity of the light supplied to your plants. However, you
need to consider, among other possibilities, whether it will
direct or concentrate the light more towards the plants than
without it. Also, will this lens offer any protection to the
guts of the device. If you are working with your plants, is
there a chance that you could bump the inside of the lamp
and damage it or destroy it.

Secondly, what is the intensity and spectrum of this light?
I see that you have only three of them mounted on your
old fixture. That's a good idea but are you getting the
same amount of light as you got with the fluorescent tubes.
As a very rough calculation, a two-tube fluorescent fixture
will run at about 5400 lumens output. This is not going to
be directed towards your plants very well, so they will get
less than that. How many lumens do your three LED
devices put out? That light will be more directed to the
plants so they might be more efficient in that respect but
how even is the distribution.

You could think about these things and possibly answer
your own question.

I wonder though - what is the brand and model or catalog
number of these lamps? Are they sold explicitly as grow
lights or did you just pick up some LED spots? Your photos
show a highly magenta tone, indicating that the spectrum
is largely red. That may be good but it is unclear from
what you have provided. Does the manufacturer provide
a spectrum chart? How much did they cost? Where?

Thank you for the reply.

They have multiple lens the outer lens gives the light more concentrate to a particular spot. It could be consider as protector but without it there is no possibility to damage the device.

They are 4 LEDs in the fixture, my camera missed the last one.
