New to Iris Gardening, Need Advice

Hi all,

I just decided to plant a bed of irises in my yard and need some tips on choosing varieties.

I live in 5a (Milwaukee). I know most of the bearded varieties do well here and should be planted in the near future.

I'm not clear about the Dutch, dwarf and reticulata varieties. I know they can be grown in zone 5, but have read on the forums here that they can be finicky.

Would it be worth my while (and money) to try with any of these? Or are the bearded irises a safer bet? Are there any specific cultivars of these that are particularly robust?

Do they follow the same planting schedule as the bearded rhizomes? I noticed most online sellers don't ship until September, which may be late for my zone.

It is certainly not too late for bearded iris in your zone be they Tall, intermediate, border or dwarf. There are many, many cultivars to choose from and I have never seen an iris that I really don't like. I am in Canada so I can't really suggest growers here as this time since I think it may be too late to ship from Canada if in fact they do ship to the US. That being said, there are many reputable iris farms in the US. Off the bat I can suggest Nola's Iris Gardens and Solaris Gardens. Links below

IMO beardeds are the way to start and add the others as you learn more about them. Bearded iris are rather tolerant of abuse even though I have no idea why anyone would want to abuse these awesome plants......lol. So I say, go for it and enjoy yourself! A word of warning: Irises are very much like potatoe chips. You can't have just a few.......:)

One thing to be aware of is that the bleeding hearts will die back in mid to late summer, leaving a bare spot. So as you add things, you might want to add something that sprouts late and would help fill or disguise those areas. I grow most of the plants gardenweed listed in my partly shady areas. Others I have include dwarf crested iris (Iris cristata) European ginger (Asarum europaeum) woodland phlox (Phlox divaricata) partridge berry (Mitchella repens) Heucherella Tiarella If there are spots that get more than 5 hours of sun, one of the clematis that tolerates some shade could be planted with an obelisk or trellis for it to climb. Most of them will bloom for several weeks in the summer. I can't tell if there is enough room, but you might want to add some small shrubs. With just a few hours of sun, you can grow and get flowers on some of the smaller rhododendrons or mountain laurels (though the full sized ones would be too large) if you have acid soil, and they would give you some winter interest. There are hydrangeas such as some of the reblooming H. macrophylla (bloom on last season's and this season's branches) such as Endless Summer which even if it is killed to the snow line as it is most years in my garden, will put out new branches and bloom for much of the summer. There are some small H. paniculatas like 'Little Lamb', 'Little Lime' and 'Little Quickfire' which are fine in full sun to part shade, and will bloom from late June through hard freeze. They start light green and progress through creamy white to pink in the fall.

It all depends on your current soil conditions and how big the garden is. A vegetable garden doesn't have to be tilled or plowed every year. If it has grass on it, the biggest job will be breaking that up. If the soil is poor - low in organic matter - you'll want to incorporate a lot of compost up front and more each year to maintain the levels and build a better soil. Sounds like you are ready to do that. I had my garden plot initially tilled by a guy with a tractor, not sure of the size (of the tractor) but it was finely broken up (tilled) rather than plowed. I would recommend a tiller rather than a plow for gardening. I don't know of any rock-removing implement. Your own two hands is pretty much it. If you pick a spot to toss them into a pile and do that whenever you see them, over time there will be fewer and fewer. I keep a small pot in the corner of each raised bed for rock pieces - mine are gravel about 1-2" across and there are not many at this point. Re planting, you don't HAVE to plant in rows. You probably do want to establish some paths to walk on and beds that you don't walk on. If you plant tomatoes, peppers or other plants that are not grown from seed, you can plant them in a grid rather than rows. You might want to start small with one bed rather than a huge area the first year. Expand it each year as you have time and materials.

Your major invaders will be deer, rabbits, and birds. You will need high fencing to keep out the deer. Add a fine wire mesh around the bottom two feet to keep out the rabbits, If you are growing berries, then the attacks will come from the air - you will need a light netting to keep out the birds - but only when there is fruit present. Aside from the "big three" you can check with your new neighbors to see what other pests may be present. Gophers or voles could be around. Snails love moist spring environments (and tender newly planted seedlings). Mice and rats don't usually show up for vegetable plants, but unfinished compost, if available, could bring them in. And if you do end up creating a vermin habitat, then next predator to find their way to your garden will be snakes. But, I guess the good news is that none of those animals are really interested in your house, other than possibly the mice.

I think it is true that in principle huge amounts of precipitation can over-leach nutrients, especially the more mobile nutrients like potassium, nitrogen, and sulfur. On farms that have received unusually large amounts of rain, such deficiencies can occur. But in well amended soil, with organics breaking down steadily, I don't think you end up with deficiencies. I'm not aware that in regions that get more rainfall, soil nutrient levels are necessarily poorer, and in my blistering summer I water a lot, and yet my nutrient levels are right up there where they should be. If anything, that leaching can distribute nutrients better, as organics degrade most rapidly near the surface where there is air, and you'd really like to get those nutrients to depth. Percolating water also brings oxygen to the lower layers to aid aerobic degradation there. But yes, to warm soil, there is nothing like a tarp, especially a transparent one. I should add that a tarp provides some insulation, so the soil doesn't even get quite as cold in the winter.

Hi there,
Why don't you take a look at the irises grown by the IrisLady in her iris display garden in Canada? She is in a colder zone than you, but I imagine anything that does well in her garden will do well in yours.

I order from all sorts of growers, including Schreiner's, Stanton's, Rockytop, Cooley's, Napa Country, Sutton's, Wild Iris Rows, and Blue J. I have had excellent assistance from all of them.

Thanks for the advice all!

I can already see the potato chip analogy at work - I only have room right now for about 5-6 irises, and choosing is very tough! I had a similar situation with daylilies - too many choices, too little space!

For now I may stick with bearded, because honestly I like the big bold look best anyway.

Thanks for the list of online sites and the link to Irislady - that's quite a collection!

One more question - I know that they say to plant bearded iris six weeks before frost. How much leeway do you have with that? In other words, will planting too late kill the plants, or just make them grow less full next year? We usually get a frost somewhere in mid October (sometimes later, rarely earlier, but it could happen). If I planted still in mid September, would that be pushing it too much?

Not in my opinion but you should mulch them with straw or leaves or pine needles. I have planted them later than that here in zone 3 and I have well over 500 iris varieties. The most important thing is that they have good drainage. They don't like wet feet or freeze and thaw stuff happening in the spring. If they are dryer, they are happier. Irises are pretty tough little plants. Just for example, check out the pics I posted on the thread titled, "What would you do if you received plants that looked like this?" which is back a few posts on this forum. Those rizomes sat in the garage all fall, all winter and did not get found until June! Have fun with your choices or a new addict will be born....lol
