I need a suggestion on a bush type pea

well I tried growing some peas. first off I think I put them in to late, late april. They are climbers and I tried to make a cage type thing for them to climb up , yea that didnt work. they are starting to flower now, but I dont expect much from them. I would like to take down the cage and try a bush type pea in the same spot when these are done, which I think will be by mid July, so enough time for a fall crop.

I'd plant a pink eye purple hull or one of the "cream" peas...just look for seeds that say bush...

Ruthie, orangedragonfly is in Massachusetts, which means she's talking about English peas. I'm growing pink eye purple hulls here, but I'm the oddball. Most people around here have never heard of them and you won't find any Southern pea seeds in the stores.

You would likely need to keep a close watch on goats in a berry patch. Goats are naturally browsers, and prefer twigs and brambles to grass. Between the rows, some sort of weed barrier might work, especially if it was put down after a tilling. A thick mulch could do the same too. However if the grass has spread to in and around the berries themselves, it will be a much harder job. Hand weeding and mulches perhaps.

just get rid of it.. and buy a smaller new one if you still want one... its just not worth the heavy labor .. in my world.... andn i bet its not just that it reaching for sun .. which it is... but i would bet my shiny nickle.. there are other shade trees.. making it do so ... when it was planted.. the shade trees werent there.. or as young as it was.. and now.. fast forward decades.. its just too dark there ... which means.. even moving it out.. might not solve the problem... or i am wrong ... lol the number one cause of reduced flowering.. on flowering shrubs.. is lack of full sun.. or the requisite necessary ... so if it had been underperforming.. flower wise... there is your answer .. and therefore.. water or fert.. isnt going to change that ... finally.. all that said.. its planted about 3 feet too close to the house ... that really doenst appear to be a spot.. for a plant that could be many feet tall and wide ... if properly grown ... if you are young.. and have overwhelming energy ... and want to try moving it.. research it out.. and give it a go.. but do it to learn... and dont get all heart broken if such fails ... proper aftercare .. would be the trick if you do that.. including.. shading it from sun for a month or two.. in your zone ... actually i dont know where you are.. and that would help ... ken

Most of the bush types will send out short runners, sort of comparable to a half runner bean. They rarely go very far tho and most of the peas will be borne at the type of the main plant.

they're fairly easy to make from bamboo, copper pipe (or PCV pipe, which bends, and can be spray painted- the rustoleum beaten copper paint is not bad) Lee Valley sells a string trellis kit with these little eyelet things that you mount to your exterior wall (or fence) with silicone adhesive, and then run strings through them to make elaborate shapes for vines to climb on. but in my case, the morning glories are doing just fine climbing on a piece of latticework, a section of wrought iron railing left over from our staircase, or just some hemp twine that's run from the fence to a tent stake in the ground.

Thomas Laxton is supposed to be a shorter vine pea, also Wando is a short pea, but has a tough pod. Feed stores carry Wando.

What went wrong with the "cage type thing"? Peas will climb almost anything. You can use tomato cones, or any kind of wire mesh stretched between two fence posts, or sticks made into a teepee, or even just broken off branches stuck into the ground, these used to be called pea sticks.

"Novella" (or Novella-II) is a true bush type, with mounds of tendrils instead of leaves - planted closely, they support themselves. There are several other "afila" (leafless) pea varieties, including "Mesa", which I grow. Most are small-seeded, but very sweet. They are fairly difficult to find.

"Green Arrow" has medium-sized vines, and while they will ramble a little, it does not need trellising. It has very long pods, and was the highest yielder in my trials. It is also widely available, and would be my best recommendation.

I had both Wando and Green Arrow this year and both are a bush type. As was stated before they ramble a little but stay in a nice bunching shape and need no trellising. We loved the taste of both.
