Growing under Lights

ok.... new.. overwhelmed and confused! HELP!

OK, so we decided to have an indoor-year-round garden. We have the pet pots, the covered trays, the window facing 5 tier racks, wondering if I need to purchase the propagation mats for heat to keep the seeds at 70 degrees and am searching for 3 foot bulbs! Whew! But my question is this- what bulbs do I need? I know, I know there are many and they all do different things but what can I get that will be the most versatile for best full spectrum light since they will be growing indoors, lend enough heat and be AFFORDABLE? We will have a space in our basement to grow about 150 plants. Can I start them with just the heat mats till germination? Can someone please give me a straight answer on what bulb do I use to grow? T5, T8, T12... ahhhhh! overload! too much! .... help....

How much do you care about convenience vs. upfront costs vs. operating costs and so forth?

In (rough) order from most convenient and lowest up-front costs to most expensive but lowest operating costs:

* CFLs
* Tube fluorescents
* MH and HPS
* LEDs

Yes, they all work. It all depends on what you're looking for, what you're growing, and what's available in your area.

To start, you're growing on 5-tier rack, so either CFL or flouro tubes will fit nicely for you.

-CFL's are the cheapest to start... all you need is a standard socket and a CFL bulb. Grow with plants tops about 4-8" from bulb.
-Tube Lights (T12, T8, T5) are a bit more expensive to buy, but use less electricty (T5 better than T8 which is better than T12) so you'll save in the long run. Buy the one that you feel comfortable with and that you can easily get tubes for. T5 tubes are way too expensive in my area ($22 ea) where as T8 tubes are only $2 ea. Grow with plant tops 1-6" from tubes.

Other lights like HID (MH, CMH, HPS) need more head-room and are good for taller plants and I wouldn't use them on a multi-tiered shelf. LED's (the useful ones) are still too expensive (starting cost) to be practical, in my opinion, but are getting better and better. I'll wait a little longer before buying into them.

I personally use T8's and HPS (and sometimes switch to CMH bulb) for my orchids.

As for wheather or not you need the lights on when germinating depends on what you're growing. Some seeds like gerbera daisies need light to germinate, while most others don't.

Meh, I'd focus more on whatever's most efficient and puts out the most blue (highest kelvin temperature), not whatever's cheap ;) Purchase costs are just a small fraction of operating costs.

So based on these statement from a well respected poster on the lawn care thread - is there a conflict between the Rain Bird methodology & the deep but infrequent watering methodology? from dchall_san_antonio's Basics of Lawn Care: Watering Water deeply and infrequently. Deeply means at least an inch in every zone, all at once. Infrequently means monthly during the cool months and no more than weekly during the hottest part of summer. Do not spread this out and water for 10 minutes every day. Also from dchall_san_antonio's Basics of Lawn Care: Watering Measure the output of your sprinkler(s) with cat food or tuna cans. Time how long it takes to fill the cans. This can range from a low of 20 minutes to a high of 8 hours, so you have to find that number for your sprinklers. Conflict: Based on dchall_san_antonio's Basics of Lawn Care on watering - Water deeply and infrequently promotes healthy grass roots & crowds out the weeds. vs. My RainBird controller - which Cycle & Soak Watering system is based on their own algorithm that also has weather factoring into the equation. Questions I've collected the sprinkler output measurements based on 15 minute scollection per zone multiplying it by 4 to get an estimate of each sprinkler zone per 60 mins. Fed the assumptions to Rain Bird controller & it variably waters each zone upto 15 mins per zone for 2-3 times per week & less if there is rain. RB's algorithm is based on run-off & how much water is soaked into the ground & their output establishes what is the 'correct' rate for healthy lawn & reduced watering cost. Rain Bird is well known supplier in the golf course industry but their Watering in increments seem contradicting to us homeowners & our deep watering philosophy no? Would appreciate any feedback!

Radiant throughout a 3500 sq. ft. house will be very expensive. It will also require a boiler which will mean you will need to fuel it with propane. An electric boiler is an alternative but not very practical in my opinion. Another option would be to install baseboard heating. Not as expensive as radiant, but more expensive than for hot air. This would also require a boiler. I am surprised that you are not planning to add air conditioning. I assume the summers are mild, but how is the humidity level? Would you be interested in a system which would keep the relative humidity in the 40's during the summer? You can get that with a forced hot air system with a heat pump. I think you have attractive electric rates. A properly designed forced air system would be both economical and comfortable in all seasons.

Hello CaymanBaby, Congrats on your new home. It's lovely. Creating your own space can be super daunting. You want it to be beautiful and reflect a bit of your own style. But there are so many options...what to do? Let's see if I can help. You have a lovely rug and sofa, which are both in a light tone. Nordic Minimalist spaces tends to have light natural tones with touches of warm textures to create a cozy, but uncluttered space. So you are definitely on the right track. At the moment, the space feels more like a formal sitting room with how the furniture is placed and the TV being so high up. Should you wish to keep it as a TV room, I would suggest firstly to rotate the sofa so it faces the TV and add lovely lounge chair or two on the side. For the coffee table, I would think about using a table in light wood. Curtains is a great idea. I would generally suggest a sheer that goes from floor to ceiling. It would give your space more height and improve the quality of light into the space. As the TV is in such a central location and the first thing you see when you come in, you could also consider swapping it for one that looks like a painting when it is off. https://www.samsung.com/uk/tvs/the-frame/highlights/ See if you can spot the TV below: You could consider using a console/bookcase to hide the back of the sofa and to add a bit of character to the space. Do add plants to the space as it will also add to a general feeling of lightness and nature. What is this "T" thing? I'm might be newer than anybody. I just bought some plant lights from walmart and then bought a fixture to hold it in, and hung it above the plants in my greenhouse. Hmmm...one question. The bulbs that the fixture originally came with seem ok to grow with. THey are 24" long, and it says "color temperature 4200k, cri=60, 8000 hours, made by Lights of America." Does this sound ok to start seeds? Sorry so new at this...THank you.
