How many beans on a plant?

This is a dumb newbie question, but roughly how many beans grow on each bush bean plant? I'm growing Dragon Tongue, and no idea how many I should plant. Ex. how many plants would it take to produce a good bowlful for a family of 4?

I plan on some additional plantings since I am under the impression that they bear the beans all at once.

Hello. I am no expert but can only reply from experience. Bush beans will produce a couple of times then when it is really hot not produce at all.

last year I planted 9 bush bean plants. I easily picked a nice sized bowl 2x a week for about 2 months.

Dianega,

Dragon Tongue is one bush bean that doesn't produce all at once. For me, it keeps producing all the way until a killing frost.

I really don't know how it will do in your southern heat, so I also don't know how many plants you would need.

I hope they do well for you. If not, I recommend "Rattlesnake", a super productive pole bean, that can really take the heat.

rich, Thanks for the quick response! That is good to know I can maximize the yield per square foot! I also tied string from each leg to the next so they can hang and grow horizontally as well. Holy beans! Three tee-pees/obelisks, with four legs each, 4-5 beans per leg! That is a lot of beans! Good thing we like 'em fresh off the vine!

My only comment is to the type of seeds. I think heirlooms are the only way to go. Many natural and organic proponents say that heirlooms are more nutritious and tasty. I can certainly say that they are very robust. But one of the best things is that you can save seeds from year to year. So even if they are a little pricey in the beginning, potentially you will never have to buy seed again. That is not necessarily true with genetically modified or hybrid seeds. My favorite place to buy them is: (heirloomseeds.com) but they have such a high volume of orders that they are not taking new ones right now. There are tons of other sites but some of my other favorites are: (victoryseeds.com), (seedsofchange.com), (rareseeds.com), (reimerseeds.com), and (seedsavers.org). Mr moiseyev The six-packs are ok to use, but beans prefer slightly deeper containers. Nevertheless, I have used six-packs and they were ok. Just don't let the beans get too big before transplanting. One bean per cell. You can sow two and cull the weaker seedling. Is direct sowing an option? At this time of year many gardeners sow directly, rather than in modules, but that is personal preference. I would not soak beforehand and only water from the bottom. Let the six-pack soak up water from the base, making sure that it does not sit in standing water. If you must water from the top be especially careful. White-seeded beans are more prone to rotting than darker coloured ones, so the last point is important for white beans. Of course the compost must not dry out either. Germinate in full light and sun. How long? Most beans germinate between 3 days and 14 days. Older beans take longer, beans that have been kept on the dry side take a little longer to germinate too. Plant out after the first set of true leaves has appeared and before the second set of true leaves. Good luck with your first time seed starting.

I have one row of yellow wax (Brittle Wax Beans, my rows are ~20 feet long) and one row of green bush beans (Blue Lake) and a half row of Royal Burgundy beans. I also have 1 teepee of pole beans (Kentucky Wonder) and 1 teepee of asparagus yardlongs. I have beans coming out of my ears! There's just my husband and myself. I'm getting a gallon of beans every few days. I've frozen LOTS and pickled some.

Plan on planting a row about 20 feet long with 2 plants per foot to have enough beans to serve one meal per day. Wait 3 or 4 weeks and plant another row the same length. They will overlap so for a while you will have more beans than you need. Freezing is a good way to handle the excess.

from own experience and a lot of reading from tests state agricultural agencies (similar to extension offices in the USA - they are run by the states here in Germany): bush bean yields are 2 to 2.5 kg per sq meter over a period of 3 or more weeks. I always grow rows 1 foot apart 3 seeds per foot, either 1 every 4 inches or in groups of 3 every foot. In 1 pdf I read that commercial growers like 34 plants per square meter, my pattern is at 33.3, so not that far away.
The 20 feet row fusion_power suggested would (with that yields) give you 8 to 10 pounds of beans over let's say 3 weeks.
A rule of thumb: pole beans give 3 times the yield on the same space as bush beans over a longer time.
There might be some higher yielding beans like sandyman's - 2 bowls a week on nine plants would my pole beans make very proud, my bush beans cannot even dream of this.
And fusion_power has the best plan: stagger bush beans, every 3 weeks another crop and there will be beans galore. And snap beans freeze so easily: blanch a few minutes, chill with water, let them cool down and into the bag they go ---> deep freeze.
