What do you think about buying from individuals

Just wondering if anyone else ever purchases from other individuals? I am just getting the iris bug, I have purchased off of ebay before and have purchased from growers a few times. I have had really good luck with purchasing from someone in my zone on ebay. (never lost a one!) But my sister got some from a friend and they had borers!! So now I am a little concerned about purchasing at all. What do you say? Only purchase from quality growers?

I think inspection is the key.
Check 'em out, check 'em out, & check 'em out.

I've gotten iris from growers, walmart, plant swaps, iris shows, mail-order nurseries, garage sales, & my mother.

Only once, years ago when I first started, have I had a problem (& I still think it was the weird weather that year rather than an infestation.)

It never hurts to dip a new addition in a weak bleach solution & let it dry before planting.

(and get all the iris you can from everyone everywhere)

I like the way you think Sylvia!

I get Iris from all different kinds of places and people and with a little care and attention I've never had mass problems.

Inspection is indeed the key, along with knowing what you're looking for. And even then, if something comes in you don't want you can always dig up and discard.

Life (and Iris) is not a dress rehearsal - we only get one chance at it and it's worth going all out.

Hi all,Good Morning! I see that a lot of you haven't received your books yet, is no problem to wait, lets give it the rest of the week for everyones books to arrive. After all the first lesson involves the book LOL. So everyone who signed up, once you all get your books, pop in on this post and let me know when you get your book then hopefully we will start on Friday or Saturday of this coming week. What do you think about Milk?

Personally, I never liked milk all that much. It was never a beverage for me although sometimes served as a vehicle for dunking cookies in. I purchase whole milk for making yogurt and the kids use milk in their cereal. I do reduce the amount of cheese in most recipes but an unlikely to eliminate it entirely. When cooking, I use a wide variety of "milks" and that often depends on what is in the house, sometimes coconut milk, hemp milk, cashew milk, etc. I have found no acceptable alternative to half n half for my coffee. We generally prefer Blue Bell ice cream so will only have ice cream when it goes on sale and that is a measured amount. Sometimes we will also make ice cream with alternative milks. Coconut milk ice cream is fabulous. Annie, hemp milk is rather easy to make if you have a good blender, significantly cheaper too. kswl, I think all the alternative milks are for people like my dh who liked milk drinking at one time and want an alternative that is perhaps healthier. DH always loved chocolate milk and now he still likes a small glass of chocolate hazelnut milk at night. As far as the effects on children, I suspect that there are many factors within the diet that contribute to things such es early puberty, not just dairy. My daughter actually started puberty 2 years later than I. It is hard to say in our family how the teeth are affected as they all got their baby teeth relatively late and so the process of losing them started late too.

I originally taught myself to quilt by reading quilting books. I enjoyed quilting, but there were a number of things that I just couldnÂt figure out no matter how many times I reread the passage, or read different books. Finally I took a class at a local quilt shop. Overall I thought it was worthwhile, but the time was somewhat inconvenient for me, a number of the other students had not purchased the right supplies Â which slowed the class down Â and quite a lot of the class was review from what I had already read. Despite all of this, I still enjoyed learning in person. Then I discovered this forum and I was rewarded with instant answers to my quilting questions, along with great camaraderie. Sometimes I would ask a question and get vastly different answers, which taught me that there are a lot of ways to do things. One day, someone on this forum mentioned Quilt University (www.quiltuniversity.com). It is an on-line quilting school. I checked it out and I am so glad that I did. I think IÂve taken at least half a dozen classes on line. I really like it for a number of reasons including: I can quilt when it fits into my life, rather than having a set class time; I can ask as many questions and get as much individualized help as I need, without feeling like IÂm holding up the class; I can pay attention (or not) to the questions that others ask depending on whether it pertains to my situation or not; The classes usually last anywhere between 3 and 5 weeks with 3 extra weeks at the end to finish the project, so there is plenty of time to finish or at least move forward on each project and ask questions along the way. At first I was skeptical about how much I could learn on-line, but it is amazing, with detailed descriptions and pictures and the ability to ask questions and interact with the teacher and other classmates, I have felt that I actually learned much more than in my in-person class. Back to your post about having to buy the fabric and pattern and smaller quilt sizes: before you sign up for a class you can look at the supplies that are required, so you will know what you need to purchase (you never have to purchase patterns) and you can see the size of the finished project, so in your case, you can find a class that will teach you to make a bed-size quilt Â not a wall hanging. Don't forget local iris societies. These are made up of people with tons of iris who are trying to make addicts of the rest of us. They start off selling you cheap iris, and then, first thing you know, you are hooked!

Seriously, our local iris society is preparing for its annual sidewalk sale in Oakland this Saturday. Two years ago I spent $25 and came home with a BIG bag of beautiful named rhizomes. It got me hooked!

If anyone wants particulars of this Saturday's event in Oakland CA, I will be happy to oblige.

Of course if you are tired of ebay, you can always try the Lily Auction and definitely make sure you dip your irises for 20 minutes in a 10% bleach solution upon arrival.

For those forum members who are from Wisconsin there are two iris societies having sales in the next two weeks along with one commercial garden/hybridizer also having a sale. These sales would be in Madison, Waukesha, and Milwaukee.

If you are interested you can email me at jem300@charter.net and I will send you a list of times, places, etc. I don't think any of these sales show up on GardenWeb calendar.

Thanks for your thoughts. I will just keep buying and keep an eye out for potential problems. I have always dipped new bulbs in a 10% bleach solution, now I will leave them in for 20 minutes as suggested here. And I will get the info on the local sales from Linda.

The only worry I would have about purchasing from anyone I didn't have some kind of feedback on is that it might not be the variety I am looking for, but borers are easily taken care of, & a little bleach never hurts. Iris are one of the hardiest plants out there, or at least have been for me.

I like the lily action as well. I am not so fond of society sales. In may area, I would say only about 25% of my purchases have been labeled correctly.. very very frustrating!

I've tried using the lily auction, but they want you to register with an email that isn't a free one. I only have a Yahoo email address and a Gmail email address. It will not accept either one. Does anyone know how I can still use the lily auction without getting a different email?
