When to plant lilies?

Hi! I was wanting to try to grow lilies this year. Unfortunately, I'm more than a little confused. Everywhere I look, it is said that lilies should be planted in the fall, but they are available in stores now! When should lilies be planted? If in the fall, how do I store lilies until then?

Plant lilies when the bulbs are available. Large retailers and many bulb suppliers will offer them in both the fall and spring. Bulbs are harvested in the fall - often the late fall - and are kept in cold storage until spring sales. Depending on the source, I prefer spring planting as those bulbs have not been held as long as those available for planting in September - September is generally too early for much of the harvest and so fall-available bulbs may have very well been held in limbo for many months. And fwiw, fresher bulbs will often produce better results.

Thanks so much! I have my heart set on the Candida and Stargazers for two clumps among the roses. :)

Let the ground get warm!! These grow and flower very fast so it is not a problem at all. I keep mine in pots so I do not need to dig them. The pots go out in mid-May (if it going to get cold I bring them in) and they flower mid summer without fail. Do not risk rotting the tuber by planting too early and they do not need a head-start to flower. These are about as easy as they get so you will have no problem :o) Dan

i did think about that.. when i used to mail order.. i just had a huge pot.. or wheelbarrow full of soil.. and would just heal things into it.. while waiting for the soil to warm .... though i agree moving entire plants around in early spring.. gobs of soil and all like chris .... is easily done what i am not sure about the garaged roots.. something just tells me to err on the safe side ... they are bound to suck up significant amounts of water.. and MIGHT become problematic in cold soil .. or if they sprout, frosts and freezes ... besides soil warmth.. it might also be a soil drainage issue .... it probably wouldnt matter in my sand ... low odds of root rots .... ken

Thanks Daylilydayzed - I've been gardening for awhile but am new to day lilies (just now realizing what I've been missing!) - just recently I have planted (in groups of 3 or 5): "Strutters Ball", "Sunset", "Ruby Throat", "Daring Deception" and "Tiger Kitten". Oh, and good old reliable Stella d'Oro. I was confusing with ASIATIC lilies - which do have a bulb, I believe? Can you apply my question to that? I guess what I am really driving at is, Is it worth it to buy bulbs from places like Spring Hill Nursery or Dutch Bulbs? Or are you better off buying them in pots and putting them in (in season)? Hope that makes sense!

Ive had lilies, especially species lilies take a year off. They came up the next year, no problem. I don't know what makes them do that, but our climate is now screwed-up enough that I wouldn't blame them for being confused. They may come up late, or they may come up next year. Lainey
