confused about plant spacing for lima beans....
Comments (0)Yes I've done my research. The seed pkts I ordered for the lima beans only gave the plant spacing for pole beans, but the varieties I ordered were bush beans. They told me 3" final spacing (after they've been thinned) for lima beans. I looked online and on the site where I ordered the lima bean seeds from; it says 8" spacing. I'm guessing with the 3" spacing I'd be able to get more lima bean plants, but the beans would be smaller? W/ a 3" spacing would these be baby limas? The 8" spacing I'm assuming is bigger beans? This is just for shelling beans w/the limas, and I've never grown limas before....See MoreConfused about harvesting and saving seed from beans
Comments (4)Harvest constantly only really applies to harvest as snap beans. Once the beans get full grown as either green shellies or dry as in seed aor dry beans, the plant has done its thing. Especially true of bush beans. Dry means just that the pod will be dry. Leathery the pod will have changed color, beans will be full, and the pod will be thin and a texture reminding one of thin leather. At that point the the beans will contain a lot moisture, be considerably larger than their dry state, and be easy to shell for green shellies. For snap beans the pods are harvested before the beans form. You eat pods not beans....See MoreConfused about canning dried beans
Comments (4)I think we have agreed in the past that is a typo that didn't get caught in the last revision. As of 2009 revision NCHFP says "Quantity: An average of 5 pounds is needed per canner load of 7 quarts; an average of 3 1/4 pounds is needed per canner load of 9 pints--an average of 3/4 pounds per quart." Personally for kidney beans I think that is a low total as it will be more like 5 lbs of kidneys will yield more like 9 quarts when packed properly. Check this discussion from a couple of days ago on proper jar filling. Dave Here is a link that might be useful: Canning dried beans...See MoreNEW: Beans, Beans, Beans Swap
