We really enjoy our pond, we lost 15-17 koi some time in January or Feburary,they were there in December,no trace of them any where, all we can figure is either a hawk or an owl got them, more than likly an owl, since we did not see any thing during the day time.
When you have any kind of creation,you fall in love with it,the same as you would a dog or a cat, our fish were raised from babies,and were about a foot in leanght,all were fan tail,and beautiful.They would come "running" when we would open the door,and wait to be feed,they would also follow me all around the pond,where i would walk, they would follow.Some would even eat out my hand,i miss them,we are trying to decide if we want to buy more,i think we will, but make sure we cover the pond this winter.

I've had some of my Koi for over 12 years now. They are so sweet and I know exactly what you mean when you say they come running when they see you. I call mine the little beggars. They love eating right from your hand.

We lost one to a heron, of course the big beautiful one I treasured. So I hunted for something to help protect them. Have you ever seen the Koi Castles? We put two in our pond for them to hide under and so far so good. They really like them in the winter for some reason. In the summer, at least you have the water plants to help hide them.

Your pond is beautiful,do you have a bog?

Several years ago, we put in a bog, upper deck, filled with just pea gravel,water runs through it to filter the water, we have had two hosta growing in the bog for years now, they get really big,and are so pretty.

I have never herd of a Koi Castle,can you e-mail me the info.Thank you.

I'm so sorry to hear about you losing your koi.
Yes, they certainly can become pets.
Here's a few of mine. I also see a bass and of course blue gills.
It's impossible to count fish, but I think I have about 30 of them.
They are now 22 yrs old.
I don't know how long they live, but I'm sure going to miss them after they're gone.
I know there's no way I'll beable to replace them because there's large mouth bass in the pond that will eat young koi.
I've tried several times with feeder goldfish and they all became lunch.
There's no way we could afford to buy mature koi to restock the pond.
We really enjoy watching the koi.
When we walk out onto the top porch (out my living room) the koi can see us and they come running (so to speak) from the other side of the pond.
We throw dog food to them.
That's what they've been eating for the past 22 yrs, along with whatever else they eat.
Since the pond is 14' deep we haven't had a problem with cranes, although occasionally we see them standing on the little dock.
The last pic is of the house after we first built it and the pond was 2 yrs old.
We stocked the pond with koi, bass, blue gill, perch and catfish and white amere (sp?)
If I had to do over again I would only have koi.
Again, so sorry for the lose of your koi.

Here's a pic of my little pond that I do have problems with and have just given up keeping fish in.
I decided to stop supplying lunch for the ratcoons, cranes and frogs.
One day I saw a large frog sitting on the side of that little pond with the tail of a goldfish sticking out of it's mouth.
I gave up. They won.

You are so lucky, no, we both are, there was a time i had nothing,so i am grateful, and will not want for more,,well,, execpt for hosta and fish,how is that, not to much to ask for is it? lol

Yes, we have the bull frogs and toads od all kinds,yeaterday we found a Turtle in the pond, don't have any idea where he casme from,he will eat fish also, so gotta get him out pretty soon.

Carol, I got to talking about your koi and I didn't mention ...your gardens are breath taking.

You asked where I live?...I live in Northern Ashland Co. Ohio.

It's about a 45 minute drive from Lake Erie.

I just love those little border hostas. Do they stay that color all year? Do they grow fast?

Yes, the small hosta is named'Chartreuse Wiggles',and it does grow fast,and multiplies quickly,just keep seperating and planting,they will fill in nicely,there are a couple now on e bay.
