redshirt's great hosta identification of 2011?

Hi everyone. I'm hoping for some help identifying some plants in my father's gardens. Some of these are 20 years old, some are from last year. The only ones I know about for sure are the #1s - they are very old. He has no idea what most of these are called. Some of them he has a pretty good idea about and I'd just like a 2nd opinion since I see a variety of different photographs for some of them.

There are about 20 different unidentified types as far as I can tell. Some of them might be duplicates but are growing in different gardens and I can't tell the difference between a plant that is the same and just getting more sun in one place and a whole other plant.

Also please note that in the closeups with the measurements my hand blocks the light so the color changes - the accurate color is the closeup of the leaf without the measurement.

I will give some wide angle shots here and then a link to the gallery where you can see all of the plants. This way I don't spam you all with 60 images in a post. If it is preferable to post them all here then someone let me know as I am certainly willing, I just didn't want to create 20 threads and didn't want to spam this one with many pictures.

I've given each a number in the comments. Where possible I have taken a picture of the flowers or the spikes if they have yet to open. I tried to provide one picture of the plant, one of a closeup of a leaf, and one with a measurement on the leaf for each plant. Let me know if you need any other photographs or information. I'm trying to organize his gardens this Summer.

Oh, I didn't mean to cause more work for anyone, I thought less spam might be appreciated.

I'm not sure if you mean 1-2 per thread or 1-2 in here. Assuming you'd like 1-2 in here I will start with a few that I know nothing about:

#1 - My dad has about 1000 of these hosta. They border quite a few different gardens around his house. They are 20+ years old. He has split them many, many times.

I will skip #2 since I believe it is 'Royal Standard' - I just wasn't 100% sure.

Here is #3. I would call this a medium size. It gets a bit of morning sun but mostly full shade (filtered sun through trees like you can see in the wide angle shots above). We do not know how old it is.

gb - yes, I know the tour coordinator that lives near here was watching the new bed go in - because she stopped in one day when Laurie and I were working on it! We gave her a tour of the garden so she could see the changes sice 2006 when we were on the tour. We talked about the possibility in a year or two of including our garden again, along with the neighbour to the north, the neighbour across the street (who was on the tour in 2005 and was probably the reason we were contacted for the 2006 tour) and another neighbour across the street and down two houses who is in the process of greatly enlarging her garden. Gardening is the neighbourhood competitive sport :-) so there's no shortage of gardens to choose from on this street and the one behind us! She mentioned it again when we ran into her at one of the gardens. They have a policy of not 'repeating' gadens until 5 years have passed so the issue isn't likely to come up until 2011. That thyme lawn was completely weed free! I suspect a garden service of some sort is involved on the property.... I just don't want a lot of yellow in my garden because there is a huge chunk of yellow in it already - the house! If I did have yellow in the garden, what I'd like to do with it is make a yellow garden as a feature for a section of the garden rather than mixed in. I have a lot of relatively monochrome/limited color range areas - that appeals to me a lot. I loved the peony/golden grass combo. In the same bed there was also euonymus with golden centers to the leaves and some gold juniper. I thought what needed to be done was eliminate most of the other stuff in the bed and make it a much more concentrated yellow bed! It would have been stunning I think. There was a lot of strong blue in the house trim and garden furniture and a gold bed would have complimented it wonderfully. Deanne - I agree that one of the fun things on the tour is seeing the personality in the gardens - they were all very individual and it's also interesting to see what it was that caught our eye in each. It makes me wonder what were the things that people focussed on here. Vyvyan Pennell, I know, was it for a lot of people! I've been thinking a lot about why that blooms the way it does. I have concluded that maybe the reason is the soil. I gather clematis likes things on the alkaline side. The soil there must be very alkaline - there's the concrete curb at the edge of the bed; the driveway goes right up to the bed and the base under the asphalt is limestone road base stuff; the porch is supported by concrete in sonotubes; and our soil here tends to be on the alkaline side in general. So, if you're moving the Pennell, maybe move it to somewhere near concrete - or add lime to where it is now? I give it some clematis fertilizer in spring because I know the soil there is VERY poor - clay, dry because it's under the roof overhang, winter salt ends up there from the driveway - and so on... It's amazing it survives at all! Maybe it's doing the 'bloom like mad/reproduce before you die' thing :-) Kathy - Randy has always been great at the close-up garden pictures. It's getting him to take 'big picture' views that are hard - he's naturally a detail kind of person.... Norma - the plant next to Vyvyan Pennell is Rodgersia aesculifolia. It's a fabulous thing - wonderful leaves and great flowers too. Rodgersias are one of gb's favorites too - right gb...? Denise - there is a x durandii growing in the BDC rose - and not doing anything worth talking about! Vyvyan is in such tight quarters, there's no way I could dig it up so there it stays! I'm going to give it some more fertilizer after it finishes blooming and see if I can get it to put out new growth and climb the ropes you can see in the picture.

Bernard, see my comment to Deanna about how to put a name on a picture. That program might work for you if you only want to add names and best of all it's free. Regarding spreadsheets and keeping track of your plants - as with the hostas themseleves, I'm pretty over the top with pictures of the garden and plants. What I do is 1. Save pictures off my camera in a holding file. Rename the entire contents of the file by the date, numerically by month, day, year. 2. Move pictures from this file to other files depending on what they are. - family (all people pictures) - Nature (anything away from my house) - Pets - Garden (excluding individual hosta pictures). When you scroll through this file you follow the season. Of course I take so many pictures I have a sub file for each month but normal people wont need to do that. 3. The remaning pictures will be (after everything else is removed) all of individual hostas. I add the name in front of the date and put them in the Hosta file. This sounds more confusing than it actually is. I can go to the hosta file and find pictures of that hosta for the whole year. Because you've left the date behind the name it is sorted automatically from spring to fall. I have a spread sheet for the names, year, color, size, nursery and whatever other information I want to keep. I hope this makes sense to you. Myrle

I lost Maui Buttercups to bad drainage. It was planted where the water came off the roof during rain. I realized it too late. My heavy soil didn't help. I now have gutters and I have hosta growing there again. I have clay loam (or loamy clay). It looks dark brown like loam but when you roll it between your fingers it holds together some. My sister has the really heavy stuff. I garden in both. When amending clay soils its best to dig into a large area with compost. This way you avoid making a bowl where water settles. Changes in porosity have been shown to impede drainage, not help. That being said, its darn near impossible to do, unless I'm starting a new bed or completely renovating an old one. So I dig small amounts of compost in my garden when I work small areas. Avoid sand, Clay + Sand = Brick. I also take extra care to plant at the right level. TC starts haven't done well in the clay so I put them in the vegetable patch (shady end) for a year. Its a raised bed, 4", with rich, loose soil for them to get more roots before I plant in my regular beds. My sister has me rescue plants not doing well in her heavy clay and keep them a year or so until bigger with more roots. If you have a raised bed somewhere you can do your own rescue this way. I have also put young TC in a pot for a couple of years which is more work because I plant them in my vegetable patch in fall and take them out in the spring, but they are cute in the pots. Someone mentioned mulch which is important. Leaf mulch or fine wood mulch which decomposes rapidly is another good way to amend. It also keeps the soil from drying out. Soil with large amount of clay is hard to wet if it drys out. The water just runs across the surface and doesn't go down to the the root. I try to keep new plantings moist and don't let the ground dry out. An inch is all I use, sometimes more because I have more, but never over two inches. Thanks, Dee. Yes, that's it. Haha on the height. When you gave it to me, it was just about our height. I had to tilt it across the back seat and open the window for it to fit in my car. Then, on the trip home, it was raining harder, so I closed the window... on the tallest branch....wasn't thinking. Now, it's just below 5 feet tall. It's still beautiful with so much more flowers this year. Plus, the bees like the flowers! molie, the Hellebore and Oenothera 'Siskyou' and doing great. The Hellebore bloomed earlier this year with burgundy flowers! I didn't take a picture....don't know why. The Oenothera smells so wonderful. -Tina

I am skipping #8 as I believe it is Lunar Eclipse, and again, just am not 100% sure.

Here is #12: I would call this medium-small. I believe this is under 2 years old. It looks like another that is labelled as "Fire and Ice" - it could be the same but I'm only 80% sure.

Babka, Paul - thank you very much for the replies. Possibles and question marks are very welcome as well. I will gladly take any hints and then mark them with a variety of names and track them down over time as they flower and with closeups and habit notes, etc. I appreciate the assistance very much.

My father will be thrilled to know what #1 is - and the dates check out (introduced 1983!).

#19: I'm guessing this is Blue Angel based on the above response but this is in a different garden and I'd like to verify. This is in full shade with just the filtered light you see in the shot. Very large.

#20 My father's tentative guess for this one is "August Moon" - it is slightly smaller than #4 which Paul notes could be August Moon. It is possible it is just younger as he divides things often without really knowing what they are.

On 19, if flower is right at leaf height it might be Elegans, If flower is taller above then probably Blue Angel. Both should show some wax/blue when early in season and in sun may go to green as was melts away. If comes up green and stays green - maybe a seedling.

Thanks a lot everyone!

Do you guys think 13 and 14 are the same? They look quite different to me in the gardens (they are in different gardens). One gets more sun than the other. One is glossy, the other has a kind of matte finish to it. They also differ in size. #13 has mostly 6-7" leaves, #14 has around 4" leaves.

I think I agree with Paul that 7 and 10 are the same, I will cut off a leaf from each tomorrow so I can compare them better...

Your 13 looks just like my Paul's Glory and your 14 looks just like my stained glass, both of mine are in about 3 hours of morning sun.

Any idea where he bought them?

Thanks Paul!

My father loves to garden and has collected a lot of plants over the years. Sadly, he rarely paid attention to labels... often he doesn't even know the genus. He just picks them up whenever he vists a nursery.

He doesn't ever look up how to care for a plant - he just checks the sun requirement and then says if it's meant to do well in that location it will, if not, not. Just the other day I noticed a large patch of Lily of the Valley that is about to be destroyed by a fungus of some kind and he told me not to spray it! *eyeroll* (I'm spraying it anyway!)

Long story short: We have no idea where any of these came from. Part of the reason I'm trying to help him organize the gardens is so that he at least has the *option* of investigating how to fix something when they take a turn...

He also likes to invite people over to see them and they inevitably ask what some plant is and he has no idea... lol

Your father's hostas look so much like the only hostas that I had in my garden before I became obsessed with them. That's the reason I asked about where he bought them. It's almost like we were shopping at the same places!

Here's my Fire and Ice, I'll post Paul's Glory tomorrow to show you how they're almost exactly alike.

For the most part I agree with the guesses, but not all of them. Here are my answers:

#1 - definitely Golden Scepter
#3 - ?
#4 - Am I the only one that thinks this might be Sum and Substance?
#5 - I don't think this is Blue Angel as I don't see the distinct point to the leaves that Blue Angel always has. Personally I think this one is Bressingham Blue or some other sieboldiana seedling.
#6 - definitely Frances Williams
#7 - I agree with fortunei aureomarginata
#9 - Halcyon
#10 - another fortunei aureomarginata
#11 - maybe grand Tiara, or a really special golden tiara. Would depend on the leaf thickness - thin is golden, thick is grand.
#12 - could be Fire and Ice, could be Loyalist
#13 - I don't think it is Gold Standard or Paul's Glory. There is some spring desiccation burn, so that makes me think it is more likely a yellow centered sieboldiana like Borwick Beauty, DuPage Delight, or Super Nova or...
#14 - definitely Stained Glass
#15 - definitely June
#16 - definitely Blue Mouse Ears
#17 - maybe Last Dance, maybe Summer Breeze
#18 - definitely Fragrant Bouquet

Thanks ctopher! I think #4 is Sum and Substance. It is significantly larger than the other potential August Moon and my father recognized the name. A few of the leaves are even larger than the one I got there (went out and checked earlier).

With #11 and leaf thickness do you have a suggestion on a comparison leaf for each based on what you think I have above? In other words: I don't really know what "thick" and "thin" will feel like so I'm not sure I'd be able to decide without a comparison.

I will cut a leaf of 13 and do some investigating based on those suggestions. Again, thanks.

I am quoting "Tigger" from another forum years ago....

"Grand Tiara is like Golden Tiara on steroids". Noticeably thicker. If you have any of the other Tiara varieties you might be able to feel the difference???

That he doesn't care about the names, I like that too!
(I wish I wasn't so obsessed with the names.)
