I lost the first two plantings of vine crops to slug damage. One night, I went out with a flashlight to find 11 tiny slugs on one two inch leaf. Even though I handpicked and squashed them, the plant did not survive the attack. The first planting of cucumbers did not germinate, so I resowed. When they all germinated, I decided to transplant half of them to another section of the garden. Last night, I was out there 3 times picking and squishing..This morning most of them look desperate. It's only the one section of garden space that gets the most shade that is the problem. Crop rotation and less leaf mold next season hopefully will solve my problem. Egghead, I hope your second sowing is more successful than the first.

I was tempted to buy a different Ortho ecosense product. But then I wondered if I really wanted my money going to a company that encourages so many uninformed people to pollute our planet. While I am not trying to encourage supporting one brand over another, as long as you are purchasing stuff in a bottle/box you will always be sending money to companies who do things you can't trust. There is no plant on this planet that uses more phosphorus than nitrogen or potassium. Not one. Shop the fertilizer aisle and organic/synthetic makes no difference. You will readily find products offering more phosphorus than anything else in spite of the fact that no plant on earth uses that much P. Why? Simple. People think high P ferts organic or synthetic makes more flowers/fruits. It isn't even remotely true, but the myth is so prevalent that makers of products cater to the myth rather than risk losing a sale trying to educate the customer. Even your favorite company is serving up what consumers demand rather than what they actually need. Organic/synthetic makes no difference here. It's just the profit motive in effect. Neptune Harvest does it, Dyna-Gro does it. Worm's way does it, Miracle Grow does it. I am, like you, uncomfortable with labeling laws in the US as it regards products. I don't want to see labels saying 99% inert ingredients, I want to know what they actually are. Unfortunately the law doesn't require this and nobody volunteers this info organic or synthetic. If you buy it in a bottle, box or bag, nobody is going to tell you what all is in it because they don't have the legal obligation to do so. Organic/synthetic makes no difference in this regard.

I tried ammonia and soap mixed and put it in a spray bottle last night. I also wore a head lamp. Prepared to go hunting with anticipation of slaughtering snails and slugs. I was not disappointed!. As soon as I sprayed the slugs they melted literally. Spraying snails climbing up walls and plants was even more fun. As soon as the spray hit the snail they fell off the wall immediately. Tonight I am preparing to hunt them on a bigger scale and drench the yard in this concotion. Hope people don't think I am a sicko. But after working daily in my yard and spending so much money. I had to wage war. I won the war. Hope it killed the earwigs on my artichokes. They have destroyed every artichoke. Help. All of the recommended methods don't work. How do commercial organic artichoke Farmers kill them. They are earwigs favorite meal? Starshine

That is a great shot! I don't mind the small toads, but get a little freaked out when they get to that size. I just wish mine did a better job with the slugs.
