avid seed starter: 1000w MH light??

Hi everyone,

I am an obsessive seed starter. I've been seeding and growing-on hundreds of plants (bedding, fruit, veg and herb) per season, for 10 years. I grow under "gro-light" florescent tubes mounted in an open shelving unit. I can only grow them so big due to the fact I can't raise the lights very high. So, this year I got the idea to maybe move up to a 1000W Metal Halide set-up. I thought I could start my seeds, raise them up to be big, strong plants and maybe even grow some peppers, tomatoes and herbs during the long winter. But, it's primary use would be to start seeds and plants and grow them on to put out in the garden. My question would be: is this a sensible idea or a completely silly one? Do I need this amount of light to do what I always did with my florescents? Would it make any improvements to my growing situation to make it worth the extra expensive? Has anyone done this and was pleased, or conversely, disappointed? Any comments or suggestions are most welcome!! I want to know as much as I can before I leap into something dumb!!

Do I need this amount of light
This is the key question and must be answered before you can make progress. How many plants are you raising? How much area needs lighting? How many fluorescents are you planning to replace? A 1000W metal halide would cover something in the region of 50 square feet, perhaps a little less if used on large mature plants. Of course if you only want to light half that space, there are 400W metal halides ;) Area of less than about 20 square feet are best lit by fluorescents of some kind or other.

Metal halides are well suited to providing intense light to large plants over a fair area, but can be a nuisance for evenly lighting large areas of smaller plants. Obviously metal halides are also not well suited to lighting trays of plants on several shelves, they would need to be laid out more or less in a single area with the light hanging a few feet above them.

You might also want to examine why your fluorescents are not getting the job done. The two main reasons why fluorescents don't do the job on taller plants is that you have old lights or that you have poor reflectors (or no reflectors at all). Modern fluorescents are anything up to 100% brighter than what you would have bought at Home Depot 10 years ago, and of course fluorescents of that era lose a considerable amount of light after the first thousand or two hours. Your statement that "you can't raise the lights very high" tells me that you have poor reflectors or no reflectors at all, so the light spills out everywhere except the plants. Your solution is to have the tubes almost touching the leaves but of course that doesn't work for tall plants.

I'm currently growing 10-12" roses Fair Bianca, they're going into bloom, under a panel of 20 fluorescent t8's. I modded the reflectors with mylar, and I have the option for overdrive, which is probably overkill. My garden is 4' x 6', and has room for 14 standard 11 x 21" trays. I'm currently growing 72 rooted cuttings in 6x6" square plastic pots.
The typical illumination is 2000-3000 footcandles, normally driven. I haven't grown peppers, but roses are doing fine. Paul Mozarowski.

I too would be skeptical as it is far from the ideal set-up and you'll encounter several issues. But can you grow some plants? Sure. Lots of FAQs and discussions here you need to browse through before starting - the problems with kits, need for supplemental lighting, heating pads, how to use the cover, soil temps required for germination, why plants get leggy, etc. "Success" is a relative term. Some are content with what they can produce with what you have. Most are not. But it all depends on how much money and effort you want to put into it. First off all, forget the HPS. I use HPS and it is fine for seed starting, but MH simply produces stronger plants. The HPS is for assistance when it comes time for flowering. It isn't a bad light at all and if you already had it I would say use it, it is simply that MH is better suited to vegetative growth than HPS is so if you are buying now, go with MH. Next, to cover an 11x20 area there is no way a single light can do that. Your lumen calculations don't work out because lumens drop as distance from the light source increases. They drop rapidly. You should be thinking of a 1000 watt light as being able to adequately cover a 6'x6' area. I use a 400 watt HPS in a 2'x5' area with appropriately shaped reflector and the plants at the edge of the 5' strip show that they are not getting as much light as those under it. Really my light only does a good job for high light plants in a 2'x3' area, but could probably handle 3'x3' with a different reflector. Your 11x20 area could be covered with 6 1000w lights. Effectively giving you 12'x18' of coveraged if hung in 2 rows 3 in each row. Alternately you could go with fewer lights, but invest in an electric light mover. Of course all this is just guidelines. A lot of it depends on how much light your specific plants really need to survive and whether you wish them to survive or thrive during the winter. You might want to build the greenhouse and try it without supplemental lighting one year and see how things go before jumping into the cash outlay for lots of lights. You might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

First, the Chromalux are no good for plants. These are incandescent bulbs and don't produce enough light. A single 400W metal halide or HPS would produce over five times as much light as your two 150W Chromalux. I would suggest that a single 400W metal halide or HPS would be suitable for lighting a 4'x4' area. Plenty for overwintering jungle tropicals, you could probably even do that with a 250W. Maybe you would want a bit more if you wanted to keep high light plants in growth. Put them lamp anywhere you like, so long as it shines on the plants. A single lamp really needs to be above the plants to avoid shading problems and leaning growth. If you wanted to use half a dozen fluorescents instead, you could mount them vertically around the sides of the planting area. In all cases, you will need reflectors to get the light all going onto your plants. Seedlings will do fine under 3000K, or the 3000K/6500K mix you have. No need to go to all 6500K. Avoid the actinic, they are too blue and the UV will fry your plants. Makes corals fluoresce nice though :) What seeds are your growing? Things like annuals and other full sun plants should be grown with the fluorescents nearly touching the tops of the seedlings. Watch out for burning if you get the T5s too close. Use a fan or move them a couple of inches away from the leaves. Some tropicals would want less light, which you can get by moving them further away. In terms of light available to the plants, metal halide and HPS are roughly equivalent. A strict calculation would show that HPS actually produces more usable photons than the metal halide. The problem with HPS is thar the colour can make the plants think it is time to stop growing and start flowering. If this happens with the plants you are growing then you need more blue light, and switching to a metal halide is one way to do it. Commercial growers tend to use HPS because it is more efficient and then supplement with just enough blue light to keep the plants growing instead of flowering.

I'm learning too, so take my (extremely spammy) advice with a grain of salt. I start seeds early so I can transplant them into my garden, so hopefully my advice will help. When using seeds from last year, depending on the type of plant, the amount of seed that may still be viable will vary from type to type. Some seeds last seemingly forever, while others need to be planted the same year they were collected. Do some research online to find out. Be careful with potting soil. Many brands can be too thick in texture and full of things like fertilizer, which can affect your seedlings' ability to grow. It's better to get seed starter soil, or soil that's lighter in texture. As for florescent lighting versus LED: not all light from bulbs will work for growing. It all depends on your setup, what you're growing, what sort of budget you have, and if you're growing indoors or just starting plants to place outdoors when spring arrives. The last one is important because the larger and more mature the plant, the more light you'll need. If you're just starting seeds indoors, most types of florescent lights should do the trick, though more experienced people here may have better ideas. Florescent lights are generally inexpensive and widely available, which is probably why that site recommended them. Since this'll be in a greenhouse, you'll have to consider things like moisture (ie, will the light fixture be okay being in a greenhouse year after year?), how you'll hang your lights, and how you'll space them around your seedlings. I grow in the basement, so I use a wire shelving unit and raise the seed beds to the light. If you can't hang your lights from the ceiling, you can possibly affix your lights to a frame (you can make your own with wood, pipes, repurposed shelves, buy kits, etc) and put them on small chains with s-hooks, so you can bring them up as the plants get higher. I plug my lights into a timer so that they're not on 24/7, which saves electricity.
