Another unknown purple-stripe
Comments (3)Thanks Annette, I guess it's not Auntie Vi afterall. In that pic your bean definitely looks more maroon on a cream background. Mine is tan and brown, with the faint, splotchy, purplish-overlay. Hard to describe and I couldn't pick it up in the photo. I'm leaning toward the Oregon Giant right now, since it was found throughout this region, the descriptions match what I was told, and the dry pean pic on "abeancollectorswindow" is pretty dead on. We'll see how it grows. Once all yours grow out you must tell us which is the tastiest purple-stripe! Here's something amusing...the man that gave me these beans, took them back to Italy a few years ago for his sister. She now grows hordes of them for sale locally. So it's only a matter of time that they're brought back across the big pond as a new "purple-stripe" variety from Italy! Tatiana...See MoreEarliest Snap Beans
Comments (7)I never heard of rice beans. These forums are an education. Dean, how do you rate your beans on flavor? I'm growing four kinds of bush beans in containers: Black Valentine, Provider, Royal Burgundy, and Tenderpod. Provider was the earliest (didn't count days) and the most prolific. Black Valentine was the second earliest. Royal Burgundy and Tenderpod have been lagging behind, and I picked the first of them today. This is my first time growing any of these particular varieties. I had been thinking Tenderpod sounded a tad gimmicky, and since it hasn't impressed me with earliness or yield, I wasn't feeling all that positive about it . . . until I tasted it. Not beany, which is what I usually like, but definitely delicious. I was prepared to love Royal Burgundy, which people have raved about. I liked it, but I liked Tenderpod better. I'll have to compare Tenderpod to Black Valentine, which I also liked a lot. As for Provider, the flavor is decent I award them a lot of points for "early and prolific." I have Kentucky Wonder and Fortex growing on an 8' arch. Some of the KWs have reached the top, but none of the plants have blossoms yet....See More2011 Warm-Season Variety Grow List
Comments (47)Just wanted to address the picture (my pics) issue really quickly. I have often been accused of over-sharing on the internet. I live on a corner lot, so anyone who frequents this forum could probably drive by and recognize my garden. If a pedophile is lurking here, they could see my kids and perhaps figure out where I live. That does concern me somewhat, but I watch my kids like a hawk, and I think that a true pedophile has many more extensive and disgusting sources of phtos than my baby butt garden pics. I can't help but share pics of my garden and my kids, they are my biggest sources of pride and I just love to share. I know I am naive but I feel in my heart that most if not all gardeners are good folks. I trust this forum and I feel safe here. As for my grow list: I am going to try to grow Nematode Resistant plants when possible. I am scaling back this year as far as varieties for this reason. I am currently on a seed hunt for: Pole Beans: Poamoho or Alabama No 1 Bush Beans Monoa Wonder or Harvester Lima Bean Nemagreen Bell pepper charleston belle or carolina wonder Wando Peas My herbs, lettuces, spinach etc don't seem affected by RKN so I will again grow tons of them. I hope to grow around 20 Nematode resistant tomatoes (assorted). I cannot find any nematode resistant cucs, squash, or soybeans, so I am unsure what I will do for those or if I will just skip them this year. I'd also love to grow carrots and beets but last year both were a complete failure (tiny stunted crop). Jo...See MoreGreen Beans - Pole, Snap
Comments (11)Thanks everyone! Carol, I "thought" I had Blue Lake pole, but turns out they are the bush variety. I prefer to grow the pole beans because of my limited garden space. Up not out, ya know. Dawn, I wondered about Lazy Housewife, but as you say, they supposedly ripen all at once, and I don't know if I will be able to handle a crop like that. This is all new to me, and I'm trying to match the crop with my lifestyle, which as you know can be all over the place. In searching for the Zelma Zesta variety, Dawn, I came across a website of a fella in South Carolina who grows these and many other varieties of beans. Not all are pole/snaps, some are runner, half-runner, shellies, Lima, and bush types, but he offers some history on a few of them, which is very interesting to me. Maxmex, thanks for the link. I will sit and read it thoroughly tonite. You may know this guy, his name is Rodger, lives in SC, and I believe he appears a lot on the Beans, Legumes forum here at GW. He sells packets, and they are kinda high priced ($4), but that includes postage. There are 100 seeds per packet. Woods Mountain is not available, but if he hasn't sold out yet, the others listed are. I think Rodger also grows seeds for SSE and a couple of varieties for Remy. Here's some of the varieties he offers and maybe you have grown some of them, too: Woods Mountain Crazy Bean (was told they were pole, but his are bush) Juanita Smith Bean (moderate runner, edible pod, also grown as a shelly; cornfield type) Greasy Cutshort (edible pod or shelly Cutshort Greasy (difference is pod length) Rams Horn (Half Runner, heat tolerant and the Zelma Zesta. Others that lack descriptions include Purple Goose, Rose, Turkey Eye, Pink Tip, Blue Marbutt, Black Goose, Ole Joe Clark, Cherokee Turkey Eye, Cream Crowder, Redstick Bean, Ma Williams Pole, Logan Giant, Friedrich Pole, Large Greasy Bean. I would like to order from this fellow. If anyone has comments or a better place to check, tho, please let me know. Susan Here is a link that might be useful: Rodger's Heirlooms...See Morefarmerdilla
