My experiment FAILED!!!!

I was so confident it would work, too! I tried to propagate my hydrangeas by layering them. Last spring I wounded the cane, sprinkled a little rooting hormone on the wound and weighted it down so the wound would touch dirt. I think I even buried it slightly before I weighted it. We've had our first frost, so I could inspect my babies...and they ALL withered instead of rooted! Can you believe it? Each and every wounded stem just up and died. In the meantime, another hydrangea self-propagated by layering without any help from me whatsoever. The nerve.
