Oak Leaf Hydrangea dying!
Comments (1)Is the soil getting drier on one of the shrubs? You may need to water more or more often. Make sure you have 3-4" of mulch up tp to the drip line. Do you have any evidence that there are insect pests (not the ants) at work? Check the leaves' top and bottom. Check stems too. Also, some winter damage can show up as browning stems at times when the plant is stressed (say, during the summer months). Some pests also drill under the soil and can disturb the roots. The pest(s) may have caused more damage in one shrub so it becomes more obvious. Oakleafs are notorious for having root rot when exposed to wet soil for long periods of time. Drainage may be keeping one plant fine and the other not. It is too early for dormancy. That will happen when Fall's cooler temperatures arrive....See MoreOak leaf hydrangea
Comments (3)They do well unless the tree is competing with it for water. Other possibilities: do remember that as time passes on, your shrub gets larger and will need more water. If you have not had to increase the amount of water per watering, you may to try doing that too. And maintain 3-4" of mulch up to the drip line to prevent the moisture from evaporating rapidly in the summer. If you overwater, this can cause the oakleafs to develop root rot because they are very sensitive to wet soil. If they are wilting 24/7, that would suggest a root rot issue to me. If they wilt but recover by nightfall or by the next morning, that would be ok....See MoreHave your oak leaf hydrangeas leafed out yet?
Comments (5)Ah the hopefulness of a gardener with a dead shrub. I'm doing the same thing with a leafless Cotinus Golden Spirit while one on the other side of the yard is fully clothed in leaves now. Tonight I bent the main branches and they were still flexible so I declared there was still hope. Yes, all Oakleaf hydrangeas here, even a 5 inch cutting in a pot, are fully leafed out now. And I'm well north of you. So sorry :(...See MoreFlowering shrubs
Comments (20)I don't know of any perennial plant that blooms all summer. There may be plants that bloom and then look attractive the rest of the year. That is the kind of plant I look for. In my climate oak leaf hydrangea blooms, then the old blooms get a pinkish beige color and stay on looking OK, then in fall sometimes the leaves color. I hate the mop head hydrangeas that wilt all the time. It makes me feel bad to see a wilting plant. Oak leaf hydrangea may not do well in OK. My climate is not as severe but I am seven miles from OK. There are annuals that have long bloom times. My crepe myrtles are beautiful. I have Pink Velour and a dark red four plants in a row alternating colors about six feet high in my vegetable garden. The tomatoes got watered but there was not enough water for the crepe myrtles and daylilies in there. They are beautiful very year even the last two hot, dry years. Since the rains my Rose of Sharon is blooming nicely. They bloom in late summer and look better trimmed a bit and watered. I haven't had many J beetles that year. J beetles like rose of Sharon. Diana and Aphrodite are beautiful althea names. Lots of people have althea and don't water it in summer. Cared for the named varieties look good....See Morecalistoga_al ca 15 usda 9
