Is this Hosta Virus X?
Comments (10)Melissa is right, don't dig yet. You want to be sure it's not just frost damage. Wait for a new flush of leaves and see what they look like. You could also get some test strips if you want peace of mind. Don't be sharing plants with anyone or moving stuff around until you know. Remember the virus is spread by the plant sap, so wash your tools with 10% bleach if you work on or around these plants. Personally I wouldn't touch them with tools until I was sure. The virus will need a wound, like a cut root, or scape in order to enter another plant. You should also know that the virus doesn't spread during the summer or fall. So you should wait until the plant is flowering anyway if you are going to remove it. Steve Here is a link that might be useful: June 2010 Summary Report on HVX...See MoreBest hosta with pure white?
Comments (13)Oh boy, El Nino and Great Escape are really beautiful and the blue would blend well with the pair of Tom Schmids I have in this area, recommended by this forum some years ago. I also have several Halcyons here and the web says El Nino and Great Escape are sports of Halcyon. So that would make a pretty picture. Guess I have a tough decision to make. Just concerned that they may be bigger than I can use in this spot....See MoreCan I wash my hosta?
Comments (24)Bkay, I know this isn't what you were asking (how to safely remove the honeydew), but as to removing the aphids themselves (the source of the honeydew, I have some ideas. When I get aphids they are usually directly connected to ants. My understanding is that ants herd and milk aphids much the way we herd and milk cows. This may not be the case in other parts of the country, but when I finds ants are making highways up my fruit trees trees, the only solution I have found is to girdle the trunk with Tanglefoot. The ants can't travel across it; if they try they get stuck in the sticky goo. None of my trees is as tall as the 50' maples you are talking about, so my other method which is a high pressure hosing off of the aphids (which can't seem to get back up once they are on the ground) is probably not useful unless you have access to a firehose/hydrant with its extreme pressure and length of throw....See MoreBlack spots on hosta leaves
Comments (12)my point.. if i had one... leaves marred late in the summer.. ON HOSTA... REALLY.. REALLY.. DONT NEED ANY CHEMICAL SOLUTION.... its a waste of money.. effort.. and since its useless.. IMHO ... pollution to mother earth ... dont get me wrong... i will kill anything that is a threat ... but again... marred leaves.. on hosta.. in august.. just isnt worth the effort ... as to the JB .. or whatever.. this years plague.. is not next years .... ignore them ... if treatment is needed.. it would be to the lawn.. where the grubs hang out for years.. before they turn into JB ... EXACTLY ID the bug .... and do the research.. and act accordingly ... you said: a large population of Japanese beetles around my plants (smaller ones than we normally see here) which might be a proper ID or not.. besides.. it sounds like the parasitic wasps may already be attacking the m ... and chemicals may kill the good bug.. that is naturally doing the job for you ... ken...See Moregardengirl_nancy
