Garden is Starting to Catch Up

This year is a lesson in gardening patience and acceptance.....slow to arrive and fill out. In the slowest areas a number of hosta look like they will be setback a bit in size and appearance (1 step forward 2-3 steps back)....you only think you are in control. But overall the gardens are looking good.....here's a few garden pics to share. Most of these areas are newer 1-3years old expansions on older areas.....lawn getting smaller - gardening creep.

Gorgeous pictures. Thank you for sharing. Btw, my lawn seems to get smaller every year as well! Of course, I tell my husband that he's just imagining things. ;)

Well, at least you have a garden this year. 1st it rained everyday in spring. Then it was 95+ degrees and baked everything. Lucky for us, one of our retired neighbors has been sharing his tomatoes. You garden is beautiful. Ramona

This is a great idea. Matthews has a community garden they set up a few years back on a spare plot of land next to Hgwy 51 near a church school,church and retirement center. Great location.

Thanks all! Yes SISTER LUCIENNE is a Shooter intro, and I really like it. We have had record temps (tripple digits in the Seattle area is almost unheard of, and we have had them for two weeks!) and this DL has held it's beautiful color dawn to dusk. Granted, it is in part shade, but I have learned for the first time this year to appreciated something that is still vibrant when I get home from work! Debra, if your's is redder, I would be thinking that it may not be the right plant, as mine has been one of the more consistant in color of any in my garden. As for PAW PRINT, I only added it last fall, but from what I have seen so far, if you are thinking about it, GET IT! It's first blooms started before our outrageous temps, but it has still been lovely at the end of the day when it has been very hot, and it is totally packed with blooms. I was terribly afraid that I would not get the watermark in my "cool...ha ha ha" world, but every bloom has been wonderful. I am doing a budcount analysis this year for all of my dl's (Thanks Rita, for the inspiration to really SEE what my plants are doing), and I would bet that even as a first year plant it is in my top 20%. The pic of WOW was taken early in the am, so the color by evening was much more washed out...it is not a real good "color holder" when the heat is on I am thinking....

welcome to the forums .... where are you .... big city name and zone will help with planting time suggestions ... imo ... FREE pine needles are the best FREE mulch ... if it were me.. i would not remove them ... note key word.. lol ... plants are not children.. they usually dont need to be fed unless a soil test indicates something is lacking from your soil ... that said.. broadcasting a little lightweight general fert like 6-6-6.. or 10 cubed.. or 12 cubed... usually wont hurt if lightly applied .... if you want to discuss the veg failure.. perhaps a new post on that topic would be good ... and perhaps include the veg forum for those experts ... there is also annual and perennial forums.. rather than the garden clinic forum.. for general discussions .. we are always happy to have new peeps... and we will get you up to speed quick enough ... ken ps: got a long phone call.. so i hope this posts properly ...

Your Blue Hawaii is especially nice this year.

I just got Magic Fire after seeing in Don Rawson's garden. Are you growing yours in a lot of shade? The center of yours is a lot more dark than mine.

How old is your Galaxy? I recognized it right away as I had one in the shopping cart last night, but was able to resist the urge and went to bed without buying it.

Paul, I spy beautiful hosta gardens I will be looking at over and over. I also spy a hiding angel, flip flops, a bug, welcome, a fish, and fleur de lis on a fence. I just love your combos, companion plantings, and tasteful secret treasures scattered about for just the right touch. Dreamy.

Gesila, Magic Fire is planted in morning sun in hopes the number of divisions gets a bump. Of course this year sun, only applies to the last week, as everything else has been rain and/or overcast. Galaxy was new in 2011 and seems to be taking hold very well. Had to twist out one green division this year, but rest is doing well. It was divided off of an established clump.

Paula, the tree is an oak - have a couple different types in that garden.

WW, I enjoy finding plants and whimsy pieces to complement the hostas. Also like to plant and plan around rocks.
