Help in moving a hydrangea tree.

My mother received a hydrangea tree as a memorial for my stepfather two years ago. I planted it against her garage so it gets protection from the west wind and all the east sun it wants. Now she is moving in the spring and wants me to take it. At present it is about 3 feet tall and as wide. I am wondering how big these things get and what is the best way to transplant it down here at my house. I can put it the same type of situation it is in now, protected from the west and north winds, but I don't want a monster planted next to my house. Any words of wisdom would make this winter go much smoother, I wouldn't stress about it. It means the world to her and I don't want it to not make it. If I know what to do I can tell her so she will relax also.

Do you know what kind of hydrangea it is? If it is a Paniculata (PeeGee), you can prune it back in early Spring to keep it to size if you like......yg

If you have a digital camera, take a photo of the leafs. That way you can get better advice. I just transplanted a pg with a 3 inch stump. I cut it way back so I could get in my car.

Hydrangeas love gritty mix. I would wait until the weather warms a bit and your plants show signs of life. I don't think you will need to root prune. A container at least 10 to 12 inch in diameter would be the minimum I would use. The east side should be OK for most locations. Yes wash off all the old soil. Hydrangeas are really not that fragile garden beauties ~ If the one trampled by a big guy, made it back they should survive a move. Be sure to try & get as much if not all the whole root balls & either pot up or sink as usual. Might want to use *Start Up* or any other root stimulator w/ watering. I've moved 4 young ones several times looking for the right site & they made it after sulking for a bit w/ each move! I'll have to relocate 1 of them again & she's a bit older now! What Hs are they?

Thank you for the advice! The leaves are not wilting, its the blooms that are turning brown. I keep running into big healthy hydrangea plants all over town that are out in the middle of sun, no chance of shade and they are fabulous! I don't know why mine are having such a hard time. I wonder if it is the Endless Summer variety? My Annabelle is HUGE full of blooms with no sensitivity to sun. All planted on the same day. Is it because it is their first year and they will be more established next year?

You should provide them with water if a finger inserted into the soil to a depth of 4" feels dry or almost dry. You may also consider putting something to block afternoon sun as now is a bad time to be planting hydrangeas. Eventually they may be ok but on year 1 they tend to pout.

Good idea. I am going up there this coming week so I will take some pics and try to get them on here. She is pretty geeked to think I am getting 'expert' help in keeping this baby alive. They were only married 8 years but they were the best 8 years of her life. Since she eventually wants to come live with me it'd be great to have this thing growing and blooming.
