Not so hot here. We are supposed to get our first 90 degree day next weekend.

It is 81 here along the Lake Erie shores and I know it is much warmer inland. We need rain also...hubby watered all my plants this morning. The pool has been very inviting these last several days. Got to 87 yesterday! Supposed to be very warm the next few days. My hostas are doing fine so far.

In SWMO we are hitting the 90's everyday. We have had enough rain that the hostas still look beautiful. The garden is on citywide tour next Sunday. We anticipate about 100 visitors. The misquitos are starting to get annoying. I am going to spray before the tour so folks won't run off. We are going to serve ice cream.

Talk about different climates for hosta growing!

In my neck of the woods(Pacific Northwest), we have not had a day warmer then 73 all year. Most days highs rarely get above 65. It's been 280 days or so(last Sept.) since we hit 75 degrees.

My hostas seem to be doing OK and it's good planting weather but we'd gladly trade you some rain and clouds for your warmer weather(maybe if just for a week or two!).

High 80's in town, we cooler on the mt, and our shady yard is even cooler. We've had a good amount of rain. Skeeters and slugs are bad. I like the clip on OFF skeeter fan repellent.
I'll still this weather over snow and being stuck in the house though -

My little clearance plants that haven`t been planted yet are hidden in shade.
My *plans to get my hosta bed done RIGHT*....currently on hold.
I hate Ohio summers.

Teresa, you mean you haven't hit 90 yet? Out here on the prairie we hit 97 back in May. That was enough for me.

Mostly upper 80's/lower 90's consistently & plenty of rain. Humid. Too wet to plant. Bugs are plentiful. Lotsa weeds to keep up with.

I love the heat & humidity, so it doesn't bother me, but plenty of people not real happy these days.

Geez,we have been cloudy and rainy for the last couple of weeks.Today looks sunny,still trying to get the ground warmed up from winter.Hostas are slow getting any size to them!

Phil, I could have written your post! Only I would add that we have been in the upper 80's to 90's for the past week, also no rain.

I have moved all my pots from off the porch which gets some afternoon sun to under the trees to save them from sunburn.

This is the hottest spring I can remember for years. And between the heat and the @*%! gnats, well as you said, gardening is a chore right now.

High today of 53!! Practically long-john weather here in the Pacific Northwest. Supposed to be a 'balmy' 71 this Tuesday, then back to the 60s next week! lol

Weather has been near perfect. Despite the forecasters' predictions of a hot, dry, summer, there has been lots and lots of rain, though it began in May, rather than March and April, as usual. Temperatures are pleasant - high seventies to mid eighties- and there seems to be always a refreshing breeze. Nights are still cool.
There are no bugs. Usually we are plagued by blackflies in early spring, joined and followed by mosquitoes. (I wear a black fly net in the gardens.) This year, there are none. Lots of bird life and the hostas are doing exceptionally well in all the moisture.
Probably one of the nicest early summers I can remember in 30+ years of gardening. We'lls ee what the rest of the summer brings.
Winter die-back was exceptionally high this year. Many perennials could not take the repeated and exceptionally severe freeze-thaws this spring. But hostas have all come through beautifully.
I planted a new garden between May and July 2009 and I can't believe how much the hosta have grown. I planted over 100 and lost none. Even 'Great Expectations' is flourishing.
Glad to be so contrary when it's about weather.

It's supposed to be in the 90's here atleast through the weekend with little chance of rain aside from a scattered thunderstorm towards the middle of the week. The grass is already crispy and my NOID hostas, planted in a little too much sun, are starting to toast on the edges. Looks like it's going to be a long one.

Totally Confused

We have been crazy hot so far, along with the humidity. What in the world is August going to be like??? Couldn't take 53 in the summer though.

We have had many storms and over 13" of rain this month. Lots of flooding in our area of eastern Nebraska with most days in the eighties.So far the hail has passed us by and I am patiently waiting to put my seven new hostas in their permanent homes.

Here in upstate NY, zone 5a, we had some days in the 90s a few weeks ago, that is after we had 3 frosts in 4 days 5 weeks ago. That turned fresh buds brown on some dwarf conifers. The hostas most exposed to the frost developed HVX virus symptoms, but the new leaves are clear.

Recently we had a long weekend at 85 F, and I thought I had it bad, but who wants 90's. I am just watering my yard to permit us to go into vacation for a week.

haha yeah we have the japanese beatles here now... lots of fireflies for the last two weeks as well... it always tickles me to see them come out... we haven't been getting much rain.. but comparing to the average we're ahead of schedule for the year... here in southern kentucky its been similar to phil's situation... low to mid 90's for a few weeks now... with a chance for isolated thunderstorms just about everyday lol... beautiful sunny day the other day.. out mowing on the husqvarna and within five minutes the sky darkened and I was getting pounded with (in the voice of forrest gump) "big rain"..... and in fifteen minutes it was gone lol...just enough to water everything pretty good and deter me from mowing til everything dried... I make a big deal out of watering... I'm a lawnhose junkie.. about 300ft of hose and a garage full of sprinklers and attachments... so all my hostas are still looking strong... though I can see how things will go quick this year... my midsummer bloomers.. mostly lateblooming daylilies and some lilies are all already blooming... I have colocasia thats about 18 inches long already... grown from straight bulb...most of my daylilies have already hit their peak and starting to have fewer blooms... since we had lots and lots of 70-80 degree weather in April...Its going to be a boring fall for gardening... Good thing I have guns lol

Low to mid 70's here this week. It was in the mid-80s over the weekend. But it's only 62 right now. Waiting for the sun to warm things up a bit :-)

High 90's and 100's pretty much here on out. We haven't had any rain to speak of in a couple of weeks. It usually doesn't rain much here in July and August. The mosquitoes are still out. One good thing is that the snails and slugs have slowed way down. A few of my hostas are showing heat burn. Purple Profusion is the worst. I wouldn't mind the heat in the day so much if it would cool off at night, but no such luck. If I want to get anything done outside, I have to get up with the sun. Oh well, at least there is an hour or so in the morning to enjoy my garden.

The growing season started with 14.5 inches of rain in a 48-hour period--massive flooding all over Nashville & the surrounding areas. Now, we've had 10 days of straight highs in the 96-98 degree range, with heat index in the 100s. This is very unseasonably warm for June! The humidity is unbearable. We probably won't get a real break in the heat until September.

It's enough to almost steal a gardener's joy! Almost . . . just almost. . . .

It is hot and dry here Phil but I don't care. After last year's rains I don't mind watering once in awhile.
Lots of fireflies, dragonflies and of course mosquitoes. Baby wrens just left the nest a few days ago but the parents were busy feeding them cutworms and slugs, gotta love them!
