Help! Need pruning advice for overgrown lace caps.

We rented our homestead for 2 years. I just assumed the hydrangeas would be dead when I got back, but not so. They are now about 6 ft tall, and three ft. wider than when I left. I need to prune them.

They have overtaken the walk, so I've got to prune them back. I don't want to lose my flowers for next spring.

I have lady in red. I bought other "lace cap" hydrangea labeled "Endless Summer." Also huge! These have done better than the lady in red, but they get a bit more sun! I am not entirely sure these are Endless Summer. Could have been mislabeled. They are definitely lace cap.

How do I prune them back? Need to do this tomorrow morning if possible. Thanks!

You can always prune them hard and lose blooms for a year or wait until they bloom next year and then prune hard. Decisions, decisions....

Yes, sounds like your Endless Summer was mislabeled since that is a mophead.

Prune now no blooms next year. A development here in Williamsburg pruned a long row of beautiful LIR last fall and 1 bloom on the 20 plants this summer. Also pruning may make them grow even more. If you can wait till bloom time is over have at it or thin them now by removing one third of the stems-leaving two thirds for blooms next year.

I have several of them, and I'm just pruning them now. I don't like a shorn geometric look, so I prune them a branch at a time, with plain old hand pruners. It's tedious, but I think it looks more natural. The object is to cut out the longest branches, that contain most of the previous year's growth. Yours have gone for more than a year without pruning, but the technique is the same. Stand well back, and look at each plant. Decide what shape you want it to have, and then just start cutting. Here are before and after photos. Again, I wouldn't cut them round like this, but the photos will show you what branches are removed. Look at the wall and window behind the shrub, and the bed beneath it, and you'll see how much it's size was reduced.

1. Wetting the foliage is fine if it will dry promptly. Washing off aphids is a good idea. Don't get excited about aphids when they return next spring. The harm they do is minor. 2. Plant Tone is excellent. Or you can apply 3"-4" of manure once a year. 3. Traditional advice is not to pile fresh manure over the canes. 4. We don't know the length of your growing season or the severity of your winters. I try to keep my roses growing and blooming into the fall but avoid heavy feeding. 5. It's OK to just pull the flowers off and also OK to cut just above any leaf joint. I do the former if I want the plant to get bigger, but take some stem when it is getting too tall. If roses form hips (fruit) this will reduce the repeat bloom. 6. I doubt that companion plants affect disease in roses, except if the planting is so overgrown as to reduce air circulation and delay drying, then they would increase disease pressure. Other points-- If roses are to continue growing and blooming, they need water every 3-7 days, depending on soil and climate. If you have abundant water, use it. Otherwise the plants will go semi-dormant after 2-3 weeks. No point in fertilizing if you aren't watering. Do you have foliar disease problems? If so, what? Rose diseases are uncommon in most of Arizona. Nobody here recommends the Bayer All-in-One product that you are probably using. It's cheap fertilizer with a massive dose of chemicals that may not be needed and, if needed, are more effectively applied as spray.

LOL!! Pruning is never a requirement unless there are obvious structural deficiencies that need to be overcome. And if that's the case, ignoring them for 4 years may be too late to produce good results going forward. Without a photo of the tree in question to give you more specific advice, you should just observe the 3D's - removal of dead, diseased or damaged wood and any conflicting/crossing branches if they exist. When in doubt, I'd err on the side of very light pruning.....I've grown a good number of JM's, most of which have received minimal pruning throughout their lifetime other than the very early removal of any substandard branching. In general, they just do not require a great deal of pruning. Japanese maples tend to have their sap flowing quite early in the season - like now - and will bleed heavily if pruned when this is happening. It tends not to be a big deal for the tree but can freak out gardeners who are not used to it. A better time to prune JM's is in summer, when you can look up into the canopy to see where thinning should take place and dead wood is extremely obvious.

Below is a link to some information on pruning junipers. Note that if you cut back to woody stems where there is no green foliage, it will not re-grow from that spot. Daffodil leaves produce food that is stored in the bulb for next year's flowers. If you cut off the foliage before it turns yellow on its own, you reduce the chances of flowering next year. Once the foliage yellows, cut it down to the ground. You can plant perennials in front of them if you have the space, to hide the fading foliage. Daylilies are one good plant for this purpose, there are many others. Once the foliage has turned yellow, you can dig up and divide the daffodils, as plants that are in one spot for many years produce more bulbs around the original one. This is a good opportunity to thin out overcrowded clumps, which can start to produce fewer flowers after a while, and replant them in other areas. Oh, how sad, hokierustywilliamsbu! But it happened to me twice. One time was due to weather. The other was due to a friend who pruned all my hydrangeas (later than I expoected her to do) so she could do some flower arrangements.

And do not feel bad, homesteader57. I bought a Nikko Blue at Lowe's that turned out to be a lacecap.

Endless Summer is not the name of a specific cultivar of hydrangea but rather of a series of reblooming hydrangeas. The one most folks refer to as "endless summer" is really Endless Summer - The Original, as it was the first in the series. Both Blushing Bride and Twist and Shout are Endless Summer hydrangeas - Twist and Shout IS a lacecap so that could be what you have.

If it is part of the Endless Summer series (would have come in blue pot) then you should be able to prune now and still get flowers. Pruning hard now will remove the early flowering - those blossoms that develop on older growth - but you should still be able to realize flowering later in the season from the new growth. However, this new growth flowering does not seem to be 100% reliable for all the Endless Summer hydrangeas.

That is true GardenGal about the different types that Endless Summer has out there. I assumed (yes I know the expression about assume) that anyone who says E.S. is speaking of The Original. I think we all need to start calling it The Original from now on so there is no confusion.

Personally I think E.S. needed to come off with a better name than "The Original" but it is what it is.

Thank you so much for your wise advice! I think I won't prune until after they bloom again. I miss seeing them bloom. It's interesting to know that my hydrangeas might indeed be "twist and shout" endless summer. Thank you so much for your expertise! Take care

My TS also have exploded in growth and are budding again on long 2-3 foot shoots!!
