Big Cheap Hydrangeas -- Any Hope?

My local Lowes was clearancing some big-leaf hydrangeas (5 gallon size) for $5,so I bought several hoping to create a hydrangea border. I moved them while still in their pots several times before finding a place that didn't melt them in this Texas heat (north side of the house -- I'll have to dig up the cannas that are already there -- sigh). We are currently in the 100's -- so I don't think even in the middle of summer it will get much worse.

At any rate, my question is that Lowes sold them as "annuals", but they look like your regular old big leaf hydrangeas. They have woody stems at the base and are popping out new growth both at the base and the tips. I have pruned the spent flowers off (huge pink floppy flowers) and so far they seem to be doing ok. What do you all think? Will these be worth the trouble of digging up the cannas, or are there some types of hydrangeas that are this large (about 3' diameter now) that are only annuals? The folks at Lowes were clueless.
