new methods to grow tropical plants in the northwest

Hi,

I saw a gardening show in which the gardener in Ontario, Canada, buries his fig trees to protect them from the harsh winter temps. I would like to try this with tropical plants in the Northwest. Has anyone tried this method or any other on various tropicals to protect them in the winter.

Another method that works is chicken wire and mulch. Make a cage out of chicken wire around the plant you want to protect, and fill it up with mulch.

If you have an attached garage (that doesn't go below freezing) you can overwinter deciduous plants. I overwinter my fig, crepe myrtle,& hibiscus with this method. I also overwinter perennials in gallon pots that are either not hardy for my zone or too small to be put into a permanent location. I am thinking of trying to overinter one of my bouganvillea plants in this method as well as some new shrubs that I picked up in South Carolina this summer.

Hi I have not used the HID but have been doing some research on lighting recently... HID is pretty efficient... but it is best suited for plants that need a lot of (more intense) light.... Violets need relatively less light as compared to tomatoes for example. You might want to have different light setups for plants with different lighting requirements. I personally feel a decent flourescent set up is good for violets. I would make sure you have an electronic ballast using t8 bulbs (IMHO) I actually think (and have seen research) that the growlux type bulb is not the most efficent. There is a new bulb from phillips called the f32t8/adv850 that is very good,,, but hard to find.... the other phillips 850s are almost as good if you want the link to the light research, send me an email and I will look it up for you Ardy

if youre new at growing, the last thing you want to do is mix your own soil. Your soil is the most important thing to your plant, especially container growing.and you want to use the best you can buy, especially if you're not experienced. I use promix brk with biofungicide and mycorrhizae for all my plants in the spring. I switch over to baccto for summer growing and fall growing when media isn't so critical. if you're having algae in your media, then you're overwatering or using bad soil to start with that has been wet before you planted it. keep your soil dry after purchase, and inside, not outside, at least if you have to keep it outdoors, cover it tightly with tarps and keep it dry. if deer ticks are climbing into your plants, then you need to tighten up your greenhouse. We put screening on the sides of our greenhouses this year. we are installing screen doors, like in a house, on all of our greenhouses instead of propping our 48" doors open to keep out bugs. Also customers understand how to close that kind of a door and open it...so they will stay closed. Fertilizer, you want to use a 20-10-20 at 200 ppm every second or third watering minimum. That works for most plants. and adjust your water ph so that it's effective, especially if growing petunias. We use two different fertilizer injectors, injecting acid to adjust the ph, then fertilizer, and in one greenhouse this year, we have three, because we have more acid for the petunias fertilizer to keep their leaves green. we do annuals/veggies for spring, perennials for summer market, and herbs all summer, mums for fall and houseplants for winter, and of course being Northern Tropics, we have tropical available always....lol...pm me in fall if you want to talk more, I don't know why I have time to talk this much this time of the year anyway. IN two weeks we don't have time to even eat.

I bring a lot of tropicals back and forth each year, and I do find that they sometimes bring some nasty bugs back in with them that they wouldn't have had if I left them indoors. Plumeria though really do need the very highest full direct sun we can give them here, and indoors during the growing season just won't cut it. Even in a south window they get leggy and rarely branch, growing too tall & spindly if they are left in all year. Pure cold hardiness, they are just fine outside now (I have 2 out). I have left them outdoors with no damage right up to the 2nd frost of the year at around Nov. 1. They do tend to get started very slowly in this weather though, both from growing slower in the cool weather, and from pouting about too-wet roots from this climate. My usual spring goal is to get them as root bound as possible before taking them out, then they do fine outside on May 1, but this year I was a slacker and they are just barely puttering along (rainy cool May). If you've already been putting them out days, and they are healthy with good roots, I would probably leave them out now. It would be even better if you can put them where they'll receive full sun and reflected heat from a concrete or brick wall or patio. - Tom

Looks like a pretty good setup. Nice to see you have a fan going. One suggestion and a very important one--- arrange the lights OR plants to sit just about an inch or so from each other. As the plants get bigger, keep the tops no more than 2 inches from the lights. This keeps them from stretching TO the light and ending up with spindly transplants. Looks like the shelving pin holes will work perfect for this. If some plants grow faster then others, just prop some old books under the shorter ones. Good luck. Kevin

What kind of fig do you have and how cold does it get? We have occasional freezing down to the mid 20's quite frequently and my figs are just fine. i have both purple and green figs growing wild......

The variety of my fig is called Celeste. It is supposed to be one of the hardiest. My garage rarely goes below the mid 30's unless the temperature outside is below 0. Then I cover by plants with blankets

A FEW INCHES OF SNOW IS A FAIRLY GOOD INSULATOR, SO THE TEMPS AREN'T CONSTANTLY CHANGING IN THE ONTARIO, CANADA GARDEN... THE CHICKEN WIRE & MULCH CAGE SOUNDS GOOD, BUT YOU WOULD HAVE TO CHECK FOR SLUGS & SNAILS REAL EARLY IN MARCH... HAVE YOU TRIED THE LOCAL NW BANANA GROWERS FOR IDEAS? Okay guys, I do tropical gardening in Nova Scotia, and I have found THE book for all your questions: It is called : "Palms Won't Grow Here and Other Myths" by David Francko, who is the head of the Botany Department at Miami University in Oxford Ohio. He is doing just the kind of gardening that you guys are asking about, and he gives very detailed instuctions on overwintering protection, as well as hardy tropical lists. The book is available from Amazon and Buy.com, etc. Worth every penny!
